After my computer updated the latest windows 10 update my system was getting slower by the day. I kept postponing the update because whenever I update windows or FF my system slows down a little. So when I booted up today my Dell Support assistant came up telling me my system was running slow and it did a scan but would get stuck on the memory part of the scan so I ESC out of it. Finally restarted my computer and went to restore and put the computer back to before the windows update on May 31, 2018. Funny thing it's still showing the "task view" icon on the taskbar that I didn't notice until after the windows update so I'm assuming that came with the update. I'm at a loss of what to do about this update since its listed as "critical".

Go to Start, Search and type in winver

Then hit enter. A box will come up and show you exactly what Windows version you have. This is very important information that must be known before we can begin to work on your problem.

Also, please do not use Restore again. That is absolutely the LAST thing you should do, especially for a slow running computer. This not only reverts Windows back to a specific date but also All Other programs on the computer may also taken back so if any other programs have been updated they may now not work correctly.

If you compare the numbers between yours and mine you will see that your attempted System Restore obviously did not work because we are both running the exact same version 1803 (OS Build 17134.48) which IS the very latest version.

This is GOOD.

Now please do not use System Restore again. I will give you some information later about System Restore, exactly what it does and doesn't do. It is NOT a "magic bullet" that makes the computer run like a top, most of the time it will make matters worse and the problems caused cannot be fixed.

Now, please give me all of this information:

What version of Firefox are you running?

How many Add-ons do you have installed on Firefox?

What anti-virus program are you running?

Name ALL other security programs you are using.

How often do you run your security programs?

Have run either Disk Cleanup or CCleaner in the last week?

I install updates when I am offered them, I do not ever search for them manually. I have not yet been offered 17134.81 which was released on May 23rd. I am sure I will receive it this week. My computer does check several times daily for updates and the last check done was at 10:39 PM tonight. I am not concerned. Myself and the OP are just one update behind and this particular update is NOT major and NOT Critical.

According to the information given about this update it says this:

This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update....If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

If you read through the information you will see there is absolutely nothing that will cause problems if it has not yet been installed. It relates to things like the following:

updated time zone information, issues that may cause Windows Hello enrollment to fail on certain hardware that has dGPUs and just a few other things. Definitely nothing that would be critically needed.

Many people were not even offered Windows 10 version 1803 until after May 25th so being one minor update behind is nothing major.

I only requested the version number because she used System Restore, something I honestly rarely, if ever, recommend and I need that in order to figure out how to proceed.

Why would a computer slow down? It is very rare that updating the system or the default browser would cause the computer to slow down.

I can truly say I have never seen either of those cause a computer to run slowly.

In fact a grossly out of date operating system and/or browser would be more likely to slow down things rather than an operating system & browser that are up to date.

More common causes are;
1. Malware
2. Excessive number of junk and temp files, both on system and in the browser.
3. Too many programs auto starting and therefore running all the time. This can consume all of your resources and the computer will have a very hard time running normally.

4. Running too many security programs at the same time. The RULES are ONE anti-virus program installed and running. More than one and you've got trouble for sure. Running too many others at the same time in the background can also slow things immensely because they sort of battle each other use excessive resources and of course the computer runs slowly

That Dell Support Assistant running all the time will definitely slow down the computer, I know, I have three Dells and if I let that run all the time the computers can run slow as molasses. I use it only for occasional checks for new drivers and that type of thing. Otherwise it is 100% turned off.

Problem started after I updated Windows 10 recently. Had trouble booting up my computer. Dell Support Assistant scan to see what was slowing down the system and seemed to stall on scanning the memory so I ESC and used a restore point to before the Windows 10 update.

Following the cleanup steps Malwarebytes didn't find anything to log. Advast didn't find anything either.

EDIT: Question;

In your first post you said the following;

which implies that with every update ever done for the operating system and Firefox has always caused the computer to slow down, not just the most recent update. But now here your latest posts makes it sound as if this has only happened with the most recent Windows update which is update 1803 Build 17134.81 released on May 23rd. That is the only one that you do not have.

So which is it, have all updates to Windows and Firefox always made your computer slow or just the most recent Windows Update? The last update for Firefox was version 60.0.1 on May 16th. Is that the one you have?

Hope you don't think I was picking a fight because that was not my intention and I certainly didn't mean to imply that you and Phil got your updates by doing them manually because that was not the case either, not that doing it manually is wrong, it is just not recommended really unless you have updates that have failed multiple times. I was just stating a fact that neither I nor debbier had received that latest update which is not unusual at all. Not sure how updates are released in various parts of the country or the world but I am sure their is a "method in their madness" and some of it has to relate to location. You & Phil both are on the west coast while debbier and I are in the mid-west about 300 miles apart & pretty much on a direct north/south line from each other. Since there are several hundred million people now using Windows 10 there is no way that updates would or could be released to all on exactly the very same day or time. It has to be staggered for the simple reason their update servers would have a melt down. Most generally my updates arrive 10 days to 2 weeks + from the day they are announced as released. It has always been that way for me for as long as I can remember.

In your first post you said the following;

which implies that with every update ever done for the operating system and Firefox has always caused the computer to slow down, not just the most recent update. But now here your latest posts makes it sound as if this has only happened with the most recent Windows update which is update 1803 Build 17134.81 released on May 23rd. That is the only one that you do not have.
Windows update was the last thing I can remember doing to the computer. Although my system always seemed to slow down after any updates this was the only time the Dell Support came up when starting my computer. It stated that something was slowing down my system and was scanning to find the cause of it.

So which is it, have all updates to Windows and Firefox always made your computer slow or just the most recent Windows Update? The last update for Firefox was version 60.0.1 on May 16th. Is that the one you have? Yes

I think you are right about how updates are delivered as I have always received Microsoft updates on release day or at the latest the day after release. Most of the time its nice to be first in line to receive the updates but there have been times I wished I could have been last.

I like the fact that my updates arrive several weeks later cause if there is a major problem they pull them before they get to me, which has happened couple times in the past. I can also see if others have troubles too.

Open CCleaner again.

First go to Options. When that opens go to the Monitoring tab on the left side. When that opens Remove the Checkmark from all boxes there. There may be more than one.

Close Options and then go to the Startups list again. Now click on these listings one at a time and when you do

this will highlight the entry and then on the right Side click on the Disable Button and move onto the next one until all are disabled. Close CCleaner and reboot the computer.

Here is the three that you need to disable and F.Y.I. I have them disabled on my computers and have no difficulties whatsoever:

Now when you say the computer runs slow is that online and offline? Meaning do ALL of your programs run slowly also, like Libre Office or your Printer softwware, Nitro Reader all programs in other words?

How long does it take the computer to boot up? An estimate is fine.

Ok then lets do some fixing of Firefox. First of all I want you to Clear the Cache;

Click the menu button (that is the one that looks like an = sign but with three dashes). Choose Options.

Select the Privacy & Security section. In the Cookies and Site Data section, click Clear Data….

Remove the check mark in front of Cookies and Site Data.

With Cached Web Content check marked, click the Clear button.

Close out Options.

Next I would suggest that you Refresh Firefox. Very often browsers get sort of "confused" and need to be set back to Factory.

Read the information on the Refresh of Firefox and follow the instructions there and you can use the button on that page to do the refresh if you wish. Read it all because it tells you what will be kept for you (most everything) and what you'll have to replace, which really isn't much.

After you've done that come back and I'll have a few more suggestions

Hope the refresh improves things for you with Firefox. How often do you run CCleaner? I'd recommend once a week at least, depends really on what you do and where you go.

You certainly have plenty of hard drive space and lots of RAM so your speed in general should be good. Hopefully you use that Dell Support Assistant to check for hardware updates maybe once a month. Otherwise leave it turned off cause it absolutely does consume resources and of course that would slow the computer.

You said that things offline seem the same but online is when things are slower, that does not mean the slowness is due to the computer and definitely not due to Windows or Firefox updates, it could be your internet connection. Maybe they have slowed things for some reason. Check your internet speed at

www.speedtest.net/

that will at least give you an idea if things are slowing down. If they are you might check with your internet provider. Are you connected via ethernet or wi-fi?

I have never heard of the Facebook Tracker add on and since you say you have trouble mainly on Facebook then if it were on my Firefox I would remove it and make sure your Privacy settings on FB are very strict. To block ads the best add on is AdBlockPlus

Since you are using wi-fi have you ever rebooted your router? Have you checked for firmware updates for your router? If not, you should.

Certainly rebooting would be good and should make it run faster.
