something went wrong with installing the update. Turning the laptop on this morning we got a screen with "Restoring your previous version of windows". After about an hour the laptop booted up and seems to work OK. No Creators uldate though. I wonder if the update will come again? Thanks Absolutely it will come again until you do finally receive it. I presume you mean the update to Windows 10, version 1803? OR are you still attempting to get the update you couldn't get in this thread?
When you left that thread on April 21st you said you would wait. The update you were talking about at that time was Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.371). Did you ever get that one?
Were you aware that the update was happening and were you following along as you should have been doing?
When installing updates like this one users should stick by close, follow directions as given. The main and most important direction is not to manually turn off the computer because the update is taking place. Your post says "Turning the laptop on this morning..." says to me that you did turn the computer fully off which then would be the reason the update failed. The updates like this one will start and restart the computer automatically itself several times until the update is complete and if you override this process by turning the computer all the way off then it won't complete. You must let it happen from start to finish. When it is finished it will tell you it is finished and show you the changes with this new update.
THEN and Only Then is is okay for you turn off the computer completely.
This update took nearly 3 hours for me, others times varied from 90 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the internet speed.

I forgot to mention that this is a different laptop. I did not turn it off last night when it was installing the update. When I got to it this morning it was turned off and when I turned it on it showed the above mentioned screen. So far it seems to work fine. I was just wondering if I ruined my chance for the newest update. I shall wait. My other laptop still does not update except for windows defender which always gets the newest updates. With it too I will wait until the Creators update comes. When it comes I will update my old post. Thanks Judy for your interest.

If the laptop shut completely down last night then there is a setting that told it to do so. You need to change that setting or change your update times to when you will be able to sit at the computer until the update is fully complete because if it shuts down fully before the update completes then it will fail again. I really doubt the other computer will receive this Creator update because it was already behind in updates when you left that thread on April 21st and if it has only received Windows Defender updates then it is a lot farther behind than it was 50 days ago. The computer has to be up to date in order to receive the latest updates. If I recall you we several updates behind when you first created that other post. Of course I cannot say for sure because you have never said what version is currently on that computer or this one for that matter. In order to offer help here we always need the full information and we don't have it for either computer. To find out for sure what version is on both computers go to Start, and in the search box type winver and hit Enter. You will receive a box that will give you the full information needed. The box is like my attachment and the information we require is all the info shown on mine; Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.81) Your version and build of course will be different.

Vera, I've seen you come back here multiple times this morning and then leave after a very few minutes which leads me to believe you must be confused about something. If you are confused about something please ask a question. We cannot help unless we are asked.
When using winver to get your Windows version after you type that in search and hit Enter you first will see what shows in my attachment. Click on the tiny box and then the big box with the information will open up.

Yes, I looked at this a few times trying to decide what to write so here it goes: Laptop No 1 (mine of which I talked about in the April postings) Laptop No 2 (my husband's for which I started this post) Laptop No. 1 I actually started the thread in April mentioning the Build "Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.192) It is now still the same Build. If something changes I'll get back to that thread. I only use this laptop once in awhile to check for updates. Most of the time I use my iPad Pro. Laptop No 2 is the one with problems now. It is a HP Pavilion g6 1709 (OS Build 16299.461) So far it used to update just fine.

Both computers are out of date as you know. Computer #1 is grossly out of date, 14 updates or 5 months behind in fact, and therefore is at real risk. Computer #2 is actually waiting for that one new update so it's ok for the moment.
Question:
Are these two laptops left turned on, lids open, 24/7 as they should be when waiting for an update?

What are the update time settings for each computer?
PC Settings>Update & Security Change Active Hours and then you should see something like my attachment
If you change that time to day time then the checking will take place when you are likely to be on the computer. I believe the default time set when you get the computer is in the middle of the night. Change it to day time. Updates will NOT turn on the computers.
Also if the computers are on but the lids are closed then they will not check for updates because generally this will put the laptop to sleep. If the computers are turned off then of course the lids can be closed.

Both computers Lids are not closed during the day just at night when we shut them down. For laptop No. 1 I might wait a little while longer and then take it for repair. Laptop No. 2 might still get the new update. I'll wait there too. Thanks for sticking with me.

These of course must be done while using Laptop #1.
Read the directions very carefully and follow them to the letter. They are NOT difficult.
Follow the instructions that begin with
They do show a full picture of the .bat file but ignore it and begin with that 1. and use the Download button that gives you the full .bat file. Please note it MUST be saved to the desktop. It shouldn't be saved anywhere else.
Then let it continue. WATCH it. Follow any instructions given. Do NOT do anything else on that computer until you get the message telling you that the update is finished and installed. Then it will show you a screen that shows all the improvements made.

You have plenty of time all you have to do is make a couple beds! Geeze! No worries any time is fine.
I have been to Ontario and several different cities in Ontario, Windsor & Toronto and a few others several times and it is very pretty but I would love to go to British Columbia sometime. All the pictures show that it is really gorgeous. Hopefully one day I can get there.

Vancouver Island is the best part of BC. We live in the boonies with lots of tall trees around. Not so good for wildfires though. 65% installed... Just heard girls are nearly at the ferry... Oh nooooo I better hurry :-)

Oh nooooo I better hurry :-) I've seen Vancouver Island on TV. Gorgeous! Hey, come on, do you really think your girls will care if they arrive to beds "half" made? Doubt it.
Just tell them you were busy giving your friends at New World Tech a tour of BC.

89% The girls would not care, they always say to wait until they come...but I care LOL Now remember, based on those of us that have posted times it took to fully complete they ranged from 2 to 4 hours. So just let it "do its thing"
My two girls also used to say the same, I finally took them up on it and they really were pleased. So now I just make sure there is no dust flying around, that there is food in the refrigerator and snacks ready to eat and everyone is pleased.

All done! but slower than molasses in January. I wonder if I can now shut the laptop down wait a moment and start it up again. It wants to use the Edge browser and I don't like that. Normally using Chrome.

Normally using Chrome. Absolutely you can shut it down. It really is not making you use Edge, it is just when that update happens the info about it will be shown to you in Edge. You can use any browser you wish. You can actually close Edge and open Chrome. I don't use Edge I use Firefox and when that "Look what's new" screen appeared in Edge after the update finished I just closed it out and immediately opened Firefox. No problems whatsoever.
Have no idea why your computer would run slower with the update, I can honestly say I have never had that happen to me with any of the updates.
Sure, shut it down, wait a moment and then reboot and use your Chrome.

Always happy to help. Anytime you are ready for #1 just come back. Right now enjoy your visit with the girls. That's more important than fooling with a computer.

Judy...you are the Best!!!⛑ With your help I now have the Creator Update installed. Followed the website you mentioned. At first I had problems and almost gave up until I thought that it might be better to disconnect my keyboard, mouse and monitor from the laptop. I don’t know if it had something to do with that but from then on it worked flawlessly and fast. I cannot thank you enough. 😁 girls have left and things are back to normal (even my laptop LOL)
