When using MS Word, all of a sudden my cut/paste won't work. When I left click with my mouse, it won't highlight correctly. This just started happening today. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and nothing was found and I ran sfc /scannow but it found nothing.
I have Norton Security and firewall. I also got a Windows Defender notification about a health report, which I don't understand since I never used Windows Defender since I know that you shouldn't run more than one anti-virus program. Could Windows Defender have started without my knowing it? I don't know how to tell if it's running.
Sorry to sound like a moron. Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance, Mary

Can't say too much about the Windows Defender health report unless you tell us what it says. There are any number of different reports it might give you.
Windows Defender is really more than an anti-virus program it sort of "keeps an eye on things" and will give you alerts if you need to take some sort of specific action. Most other anti-virus programs will automatically turn OFF Windows Defender but Windows Defender Security Center WILL alert you if there is a problem with your anti-virus program or other security programs you may have running. It will also let you know if there is a problem with Device Security or performance, if there is a problem with an App or browsers. It actually monitors 7 different things so you see it's impossible to advise unless you give you give us the full alert you have received.
Open PC Settings>Updates & Security>Windows Security>Open Windows Security Center. You will then see what is shown in my attachment as you see mine has all green check marks so I have no problems but it will be right there if there is a problem it will show you. Click on whatever it is to get the needed information.
What version of Word are you running? Please be a bit clearer as to what you mean when you say a mouse left click it won't highlight correctly. Does it highlight at all? Are you trying to move something from a Word document to another place on that document or someplace else?
Have you tried copy/paste elsewhere to be sure the problem does lie with Word and not a problem with your mouse?

This is what the report said: There was a yellow triangle next to Apps and Software
1 recommendation
Fresh Start Start fresh with a clean up-to-date installation of windows. Windows settings, and remove some of your apps
In some cases, this may improve your device's start-up and shut down experience, memory usage, store apps performance, browsing experience and battery life.
I don't want to go through all that.
I Have MS Office Word 2013
The problem with the copy is that when I left click on the mouse at the beginning of what I want to copy, and try to drag the mouse over the area I want to copy, it won't highlight the full area and when I release the left mouse button, the portion partially highlighted doesn't stay lit at all.The only way I can copy anything is to hold the left mouse button down with my right hand and try to hit control C with my left hand. This is very awkward. The only thing that happened prior to this problem a few hours earlier when I was copying a portion of a recipe, I highlighted a few sentences and clicked on the paragraph portion with the mouse and checked Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style and I set that as default. I don't know if that affected the copy problem or how to undo it if that was it.
As I said before I'm sorry to sound so stupid, but I guess I am.

Fresh start is shown on every Health Report, it shows on mine and I have no alerts and I truly do not believe that is what you are being told to do, I say again, it shows on ALL Health reports.
The alert shows you have ONE recommendation. You need to click the little arrow to see what the issue is, you don't even know what it might be.
Have you completely closed Word since you began having this problem?
And, I asked you earlier to check to see whether this same copy/paste problem happens on something OTHER than Word. The problem might be your mouse which also might be what is triggering that Device Alert.
And PLEASE stop saying you are stupid. Personally I find that word offensive.

Judy-
I tried the copy/ paste in my email program and the same problem exists. I'm going to try a different mouse tomorrow and see if that is it.
Thanks for your help, I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Mary Then you know the problem is not Word but you DO need to check that little arrow on the Windows Defender Center health report that says there is 1 recommendation. Your answer is likely there.

Judy you're a genius!
I switched the mouse from one of my other computers and the problem with the cut/paste was solved. Then I restarted my computer and the health report no longer had the yellow triangle and the devices said no action required.
I would never have thought of the mouse being the problem.
Thank you so much for all your help,
Mary

No, I am definitely not a genius. I just know that if the Windows Defender Security Center shows a problem with a device then chances are the problem could not be caused by a program. Easier yet to narrow down what the problem is the fact that the mouse wasn't working as it should have been working so therefore the device with the problem is the mouse. Happy to help.

Is the mouse corded or cordless? If cordless, have you tried a new battery? But it may be time for a new mouse.

My Logitech cordless mouse cost me $20 and I've had it 3 years, changed the battery once. If it lasts me 6 years that will be $3 a year. Not much you can buy or use for 6 years that is $3 a year. I'd say go for it!
EDIT: That reminds me, you did check the battery right?

Yes, I did check the battery.
By the way, I frequently used this mouse on a jig saw puzzle site, so it got lots of use in that 6 years.
