My new computer won't boot when I plug in my new usb 3 ten position adapter. Once booted, It can be plugged most of the usb thumbs will work. It has it's own 12 v 3 amp power supply. Also, the indicators on the adapter to show which RSB is in use is extremely dim. Checked ps for 12 volts at plug. OK. Another 5 slot adapter (no ps) works fine.
Plugged the 10 slot into my original adapter in use all times and it appears to work. Could this be loading down the comp.? It shouldn't with it's own power supply. Any information would be appreciated.
MSI GAMING SERIES COMPUTER. INTEL CORE I 5. 1 G HAD, LARGE MEMORY (not sure exactly how much without lookin it up)
Windows 10 fully updated, Avira full version, Mbam Premium. CCCLEANER IF NEEDED.

My new computer won't boot when I plug in my new usb 3 ten position adapter. Once booted, It can be plugged most of the usb thumbs will work. This is a safety feature of most computers. The reason is if the hard drive fails or Windows is corrupted the computer can still be booted using a CD/DVD or USB drive because those are usually first in the boot order. When the computer boots the BIOS tells it where to look for boot files. So when it looks and if there is no CD/DVD or USB device plugged in then the next place to look is the hard drive and of course that is where the boot files are so they are accessed & the computer boots up. Because you have the USB ten position adapter plugged before, so during the boot process, the computer looks in that usb device for the boot files and of course the boot files are not there so the computer cannot boot and it shuts down.
You'll either have to leave it unplugged until the computer is fully booted & then plug it in or you can go into the BIOS and change the Boot Order so the hard drive is the first boot device.

Thanks Judy,
I didn't think about that until you brought it up. I guess it was because my original 6 position that I have been using since I got the new computer never gave any problems! I think I set the boot sequence to the hard drive last time I was in the boot sequence. I sure hope that is all there is to it! I don't like to return anything unless it is known to be defective for sure! I have 2 other adapters of 4 slots, one works one doesn't! Maybe this will cure everything. Thanks again I'll check it out immediately.

Hopefully this is it. Let us know ok? If that isn't the problem then I am sure somebody will have more suggestions.

I checked the bio and it already had the hard drive checked for boot. Now I'm not sure what to do next. I just plugged it back in and checked six units which all work normally. Only other thing I notice is the indicator light for each on/off button is useless! It is not distinguishable unless very close within a few inches! Also the USB units feel lose and goes on and off. (screen drops out and when wiggled comes back on) ??

UPDATE After many more attempts to get the unit to work correctly, I asked for a return or replacement. Received an new unit shortly. However, with power supply installed, plugged into different USB ports, it still does not boot! I have another 7 port that works perfectly. Tried without it connected, No boot! Finally, tried plugging into one of the 7 ports of the original unit. It now works! Why? I don't know for sure but it is useable this way. Hopefully some day I'll find the cause of this condition. Also, I have 2 other 4 port USB adapters. 1 will allow boot, other will not with the above trials! It would be very interesting to know what is going on with this combination! These large units are SABRENT 10 AND 7. The 7 works, 10 doesn't! 4s are also SABRENT.

Sorry for the delay, I think I have found the answer. However, it could have been something else but it looks like the first 10 slot usb adapter was probably bad and did something to the drivers or ??. After many hours of looking and searching, trying everything I could find, the computer stopped recognizing the USB drives altogether! No empty drives or with data! To make a long story short, I couldn't find the drivers on the MSI net so I finally decided to do a complete reset! Back to factory specs. It worked! Now everything appears to be doing fine. Only thing I haven't checked is if the computer will boot with the units attached. The units all seem to work properly. Everything appeared to have started when the MS update ran in July. Will continue to make checks as I get everything returned and reinstalled back on the computer. If anything comes up of general interest, I'll post it for everyone's view. Thanks for the patience!

Thank you for the update and happy to hear you are back up and running. Resetting a computer can be a pain but sometimes its the best or only solution to a problem.

Thanks Budgall, It has been a hassle trying to stay up and running with all the corrupt things suddenly appearing. It was not an easy decision to do a complete reset. I tried everything I could think of and went back into my older notes to find other processes to use. Nothing would reset the USB drivers! I found lots of instructions for sale on the nets I researched. These may or may not work. So I decided to bite the bullet and go for the reset which was the best thing I should have done in the first place. It not only returned the USB ports, it also brought back my original email of question in my other post! Quite a lot of my normal daily used programs had to be reinstalled. This is coming along very well. Thanks again for your interest.
