I found some info on how to fix this but was curious if you good folks had a straight forward solution. The problem occurred after the installation of the latest windows update. Maybe that is just a coincidence, but I think not. Thanks in advance.

Thank you Everton. That is the same one I found. I was hoping someone would have a less detailed/more direct way. I guess I will print that one out and give it a go.

It appears that some folk have ‘cured’ this simply by rebooting. If you sign in with a PIN change back to password sign in by clicking sign in options below the sign in box. This has been a quick fix for some. Good luck

My apologies for taking so long to post back. Vacation came first. Anyway, before trying the fix in the link, I looked around and found that in settings/update and security/recovery there was an option to revert back to a previous install of Win 10. I clicked it and after ~ 10 minutes, the computer re-booted and all was as it should be. No more temp profile.

Paul I presume you do know that by reverting back your computer is now out of date, very possibly way out of date because you have removed the updates, many of which are for security.
You need to check which version you have reverted back to and which updates now are needed again.
To check your version go to Search and type in "winver" without the quotes, hit Enter. Winver should appear, click that and you will be given a box telling you which version you now have on your computer.

My son told me the computer updated again a few days after getting it home and had a successful update this time and everything is working as before.
