I just made the mistake of updating CCleaner without looking too closely and ended up with a download of Avast anti-virus! There is a small box at the bottom of the site that has a check mark to download Avast, if you are not careful you can miss it.

This was covered back in May in this thread;
Thanks for the reminder because many may not have seen that original information.

As I think I said in the other thread, I have been downloading updates to CCleaner for years and have never seen this option.

As I think I said in the other thread, I have been downloading updates to CCleaner for years and have never seen this option. I don't get the option either but that is because I already have Avast installed. I see you are using Norton Barney so don't know why you have never had the option. If it is refused they lay off for a while before offering again. This is the 'official' explanation given in April from Piriform
Looking at the screenshot of the download pop-up in this link the Avast option is quite visible and while I agree it should not be checked by default it is hard to miss.
It has to be remembered that Avast now owns Piriform/CCleaner and also they are not the only ones to push 'extras' with downloads.
As ahduncu pointed out care is required while downloading - anything at all !.

Message from Piriform.
Thank you all for the continued feedback. We are working on resolving this. We do know that this affects a very small minority of people. This makes it very difficult to debug, and we are coming to the conclusion that it may require some bigger changes to the installer. This will take time, so please accept our apologies and we very much appreciate your patience. In the meantime, you can continue to use the Slim version of the software from: www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
It's a bug!

Doesn't explain why I don't even see the Avast offer!

Doesn't explain why I don't even see the Avast offer! No, it doesn’t.. perhaps you are just lucky not to get the offer, if you have never refused it in the past. How often do you update the program. Could you be on an earlier one from before the offer started ? Are you using the standard version, or the Portable or Slim version ? Portable and Slim don’t offer. Do you have ‘Unchecky’ installed ? Is it at all possible you have some leftover avast registry entries if you ever had it installed in the past ? possibly many others don’t get the offer either but those that do and do not like it are the ones we hear from. I know if something was downloading and installing on my machine without my permission AFTER I had opted out I would not be happy about it.

I have the latest version and update every time an update becomes available. I have never had Avast on this computer.

Just downloaded the latest update this morning 27/06/18 and for the first time the option to install Avast appeared. I politely refused!
Also can someone explain to me why when I run Ccleaner on my Club computer, a pop up appears saying that Edge needs to be closed? As far as I am aware, I do not have Edge running. I have looked in Task Manager when the pop up appears and there is sign of Edge, so why does Ccleaner tell me it needs to be closed?
This does not happen on my home computer or my wife's laptop.

Are you certain the request is to close Microsoft Edge the browser? Is is a possibility it is asking to close the Edge Cache Database ?
If it is the browser and you have a Live tile for Edge it could be the culprit. If it does have a Live Tile in the start menu right click the icon and turn it of via the 'More" menu
Then Find Privacy Settings in start. Select Background apps, scroll down to Microsoft Edge and disable it to stop it from running in the background.
I have just installed the latest version and because Edge is the default browser on this machine it always goes to Piriform on Edge and I usually forget to close the browser before running CCleaner so I get the request to close it.

Have you checked the live tile issue and disabled running in the background as mentioned above ? Other than that I have no suggestions

If you don't want to deal with looking for the cause then the simplest thing to do is click YES on that pop up from CCleaner and it will close Edge.
However if you are willing to look for the final solution so it will not run in the background, Everton gave you one way to do this and here is another;
If Edge is selected to run as Background app then you will see Edge running in the background even if you do not see the browser itself and you will continue to receive this pop up each time you run CCleaner unless you turn that background app off.
When I got my Windows 10 computer a couple years ago, Edge WAS selected to run as a Background app when I first turned on the computer. Since I knew that I would have another default browser I turned that off.
Very easy to do: Go to Settings, Apps & Features, MIcrosoft Edge (it IS listed as Microsoft Edge on the alphabetical list of Apps) Click on Microsoft Edge to open and choose Advanced Options. Scroll down and you will see App permissions. Scroll down again and you will see Background Apps. Make sure it is set to OFF.
If the Background App for Microsoft Edge is turned on then you will have it running in the background, even if you are not using the browser itself. To stop it entirely then the two solutions given are the way to stop it.
