Firefox to end support & updates in August of 2018. support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-support-windows-xp-and-vistaWhich means that I myself may/probably be off internet unless I can find funds to purchase a new up to date computer. My present computer is about 9 yrs. old with Vista & will probably not update to another OS like MS10.

Firefox only the first program you are using that no longer will offer updates to computers using XP & Vista and that really is the least of your worries.
Support for XP ended completely in April 2014 Support for Vista ended completely in April 2017 so you are running a very insecure machine already as it is and it will get worse.
You say you are running a 9 year old computer, well unless you are running high powered, "extra stuff" type of computer, computers are a whole lot cheaper today than they were 9 years ago. Of course I don't know your finances, which are nobody's business but yours, but you can find some very general, inexpensive computers today. Dell has some Desktops for $260, Wal-Mart has an HP on sale online starting at $107.
If you do any type of business online, banking, insurance work, medical info, I strongly suggest that you stop immediately.
I am only concerned for your online safety.

I don't know what programs you use but many versions of Linux run nicely on older computers. Firefox is usually the default browser on most version of Linux.

Linux Mint Cinnamon looks and acts quite similarly to Windows. It's a free download and installation. It is exactly the OS we put on my wife's old XP pc. She had no difficulty getting used to it.

Are some programs used in Windows also available in Linux? I refer specifically to Quicken which is important to me.

Quicken can be installed on linux by using either wine or cross-over. There are also alternative apps suggested.
