Took this snap shot through my kitchen window this evening. I was surprised it came out so well really.
Of course the cardinal is the state bird of at least 7 eastern states and Indiana is one of them. We love cardinals, they don't migrate so are here all the time, they mate for life and if you see "Charlie" then his wife is usually nearby. They can produce eggs 2 to 3 times a year. Both parents care for the babies.
We live near Ball State University and their mascot is "Charlie Cardinal" so those of us near Ball State usually call the male cardinal "Charlie"
Anyway, thought this guy's picture turned out pretty well.

Charlie is quite dapper looking with beautiful coloring.... Nice, colorful shot with bright green leaves that show so well with Charlie’s bright red feathers. Good balance with dark red feathers at his back and the darker green leaves and branches in the background behind those feathers. You talked him into landing at a perfect posing location (LOL).... Can we make a presumption that he is the “early bird” by the content of his beak? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. There is actually a hedge just below that fence and I when I first saw him he was sitting right in the middle of the top of that hedge. I asked him to wait so I could get my camera but he had moved to the fence when I returned. LOL. I am sure the hedge was very wet as we've had lots of rain in the last several days. He was not the "early bird" though. I took the picture around 8:30 p.m. so he must have been carrying a snack to eat before bedtime. It appeared to us to be a small caterpillar or some sort of insect.

Its a beautiful bird - wish we had them here. We love them. They also have very beautiful and distinctive "songs" too.
The females are not as pretty as the male but still beautiful. She is brown with just a tinge of red on the wings and tail.

Charlie is a very pretty bird. We see them around here but not very often but when we do they are so neat to see.

I do have a bird feeder and some sunflower seeds, guess what I'll be doing after chores this morning. Thanks Judy, I never gave that a thought.

What a "Pretty Boy".. You did an excellent job, Judy. Wish we had them here. We had to quit filling the bird feeder as my bobtail cat thinks it's bait for his breakfast. :[
