I have been trying to download this update to CCleaner. It goes through the download procedure and then comes up with a screen saying 'Thanks for downloading!' Only problem is there is no download in my downloads folder! The normal download arrow does not appear in the top toolbar in Firefox.

Do not know where you are even seeing this version for download Barney, the very latest version is the same version listed by jessup in this thread;
The version number is version 5.45.190.6611 and it was released on July 24, 2018 the day before jessup's thread.
The one you are trying to download was released in June.

Well ......doh! I never even noticed that the update was a previous version.! I just opened Ccleaner version 5.45.6611 again and clicked on 'check for updates'. It offered 5.44.6575 as the latest version......go figure!

Why it offers the older version I have no answer for that. I never use the program to check for updates I have my CCleaner set to notify me if there is an update available and it has never failed to notify me yet. You also can count on jessup for the updates too, she is right on top of them plus gives a link that doesn't lead you anywhere else but direct download from CCleaner.

Today's "How-to-Geek" has an article that claims that the latest version of CCleaner collects information about your computer and cannot be turned off, if you turn it off, it returns when you restart your computer. They also say that the latest version of Windows 10 has a similar feature to CCleaner (Settings-System-Storage) which is just as good. I have been using CCleaner for many years, as has many people, and I'm not happy about this news.

Here is a story with a lot more information:
Of course anybody is certainly free to use any program they choose. The built in Disk Clean up is not new, it has been included in Windows systems I believe since Windows 7 and it certainly is an option that all can take advantage of without having to download a third party program.

Just further to BigBarney's situation. My current version was the same 5.45.6611, and was installed on the 27th July two days after its release (taking into account the time difference).
I have the program configured to advise when an update is available. There has been no notification since then. When I checked for updates I also got 5.44.6575 as the latest available update, just as Barney did. There is something very odd going on. Unfortunately the warning from How To Geek and GHacks to not install v. 5.45 probably came a week too late for most of us who keep the program up to date. v.5.44.6575 downloaded successfully so I have now uninstalled 5.45.6611 with Revo Uninstaller, and replaced it with the older version. Inexplicably, when I check for updates from the now installed older version I am taken to the same download page and told I already have the latest version ! I wonder if they have pulled 5.45
My 1st attachment is the page I was taken to from the later version and the second one is what I am now shown since installing the older version.

Everton, release date for version 5.45.190.6611 and it was July 24, 2018, not in June. Version 5.44 was released July 4. But that said, like you I wonder if they have pulled version 5.45.. 190.6611 because it definitely is not available on their site. I had uninstalled CCleaner yesterday after this news came out but now I will install version 5.44.

The download site should be more informative and tell users what is going on. 5.45 defo not there any more. I had already decided to continue using CCleaner even with the added spy features. But of course would prefer it without. With Microsoft, Google, Avast, Facebook, Apple and who knows what else collecting my data no matter how well I try to lock things down I decided not to lose any sleep over one more. It’s a ‘free’ program but we all know nothing comes without a price of some sort.

The Disk Cleaner doesn't clean any browsers except IE, not even Edge. That's the main reason I have CCleaner anyway, along with the extra tools, NOT the registry cleaner but the others. Like you I figure who isn't tracking us today? Heck my grandson was in a car that drove by our local university and, honestly, within 24 hours he started getting emails from them on his phone! He had his iPhone with him of course and that is the only way they would have "found" him. He lives in N.C. and was just visiting here. We just never know anymore.

Big brother(s) is watching. The other night husband & l saw a tv ad for an airline package holiday to a resort neither of us had ever heard of. I googled the resort on my iPad. 2 hours later I went on Facebook on my PC and the first thing I saw was a travel story about that same resort.

Read the link in that article from the Piriform forum, 2 pages long...whew!
I am sticking with version 5.44.6575 for the foreseeable future for sure. Not updating until we know it is 100% "non-spy"

I am most unimpressed that Avast Software Updater is now showing 5.45.6611 as the new CCleaner version to be installed. I allowed it to update just to see if it did in fact install it - and yes, it did. I have uninstalled it again. As it has been removed from the official download site surely it should also not be available through their owners, Avast.

As it has been removed from the official download site surely it should also not be available through their owners, Avast. Frankly I think that is appalling. They own CCleaner and after pulling it from the CCleaner page their next step would be "hitting the key" that would also have removed it from the Avast updater. Puts their statement given on their website in a whole different light which says they have pulled it and replaced it with the previous version, in essence this is a lie if their own updater still gives the questionable update. Appears that they figure people who use that updater really don't pay attention when they use it so they can keep offering it through that program and get the data they are mining for from it. Disgusting.
One reason I have never used a 3rd party program to see if all my other programs are up to date. Avira has a similar offering with their av program if I wanted to install it, I did not.
