The task bar at bottom of screen is one inch in height, and shows two rows of tasks instead of just one , where it should only show one line. How do I get it back to just one single line? Don't know how else to explain it.

Make sure the Task bar is unlocked, right click and make sure there is no check mark next to Lock the taskbar and then very carefully put your cursor near the top edge of the Taskbar until you see the double arrow and drag the Taskbar down to its normal size. Once you have done that then right click and choose Lock Taskbar

Task bar unlocked, dragging with double arrows not doing anything. You have to do it very slowly. Move it to the Top of the Taskbar and try to have the top arrow Above the taskbar and the rest On the TaskBar, Drag down very slowly. Sometimes it takes awhile and then suddenly there it is and once it is back to normal Lock the Taskbar

I want to back up on this and say that some time Tuesday the task bar showed up horizontal on right side of screen. I got it back down to bottom, and that is when the double task bar showed up.

I honestly have never heard of or found any other way to correct this. Just takes patience. I'll look for other solutions and let you know.

nightowl, I have looked and looked and have found no other solution to this problem, on every page or web site on the search page list, this was the one solution given.
Here is an Ask Leo page with pictures that might be of help.

I am going to leave things as they are, no real problem, I can live with it as is.

Agree with Judy that it is a bit tricky at times to get the double arrow and drag the task bar smaller..... shouting loudly sometime helps, but can frighten others in the house.... .... Also having other items checked, or open programs showing in the Task Bar space, or using larger icons can also make it difficult to resize the bar back to a single space..... In addition to the link that Judy posted for Leo's site, he has another article about managing the items inside the Task Bar for space used that also includes the steps to minimize icons, resize them, display fewer items, and more as you manage the space inside the Task Bar...... askleo.com/how-to-manage-taskbar-space/Similarly some folks also suggest that in addition to the right click and unticking next to "lock the task bar" that one should also untick anything else that is ticked before you try to adjust the size by dragging..... The less interfering with the size of the bar as you try to adjust it from 2 lines to 1 line does help make the "adjust drag process" less painful ....... Then just a single shout of "Finally" won't frighten the dog or the family as much... . Just some thoughts of extra steps to try to get things back to normal.....
