Working on a compaq computer with windows 7. If you copy something to paste it does it. But once done if you go to copy another file to do the same it also copies the same file again. This happens each time i do this. I think motherboard is bad...ideas.....the reason why is this.....i tried to reinstall...running the install disk it boots to the disk...then the first part of setup and immediately goes to the cmd prompt...i can go no further.did a little searching and found some had the copy and paste issue.....but couldnt find anyone with the reinstall issue. What might be the problem?
Also...what i did do was discuss the issue with a computer shop friend... Hes the one that suggested i reinstall....it would only go to that cmd prompt. He had me try another hard drive as he said that one could be bad which it wasnt....so i tried another one with the same result. He concluded that the motherboard may be bad which is what i suggested to him before i even tried all that....because its just not normal. All i can think of is virus or either a bad motherboard. I hadnt run any scans on it yet. I probably should have before posting....but i thought someone may have run into this issue Somewhere out there.

Instead of trying to answer your "What might be the problem?" question without knowing anything about the computer you are trying to fix, I think it would be nice if you provide more information about the computer and the various steps you have taken in your attempted repairs. What diagnostic software and testing have you used? What results to the testing reveal? Have you tested the various computer components? Help up help you.

Did this computer originally hold Windows 7?
Your copy/paste problem we need to know where you are copying from and what you are pasting to.

Did this computer originally hold Windows 7? Your copy/paste problem we need to know where you are copying from and what you are pasting to. It originally had vista i think. It does it on any file inside a folder you copy and paste into a new folder. If you try and copy another file from that same folder it leaves the previous file from that folder selected and copies it along with the other one. The only fix i can think of which is no fix..is exit the folder you originally copied from and reopen it to copy something else...or either hold down control and click the previously copied file so as to deselect it. Neither of which is a fix for the issue and a bit inconvienent. Edit....this laptop used to not do this....it just started doing it recently.

File inside a folder to new folder means nothing. Lots of things are held in folders, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Photographs. If you are moving from one folder to another copy/paste is not what you use. Drag items from old folder to new folder. Copy/paste from one Document to another document to copy a picture you open it to paint or a photo program and then save it to another folder
Since the original os was Vistas what kind of Windows 7 disk are you using? I would recommend a CLEAN install, erase the hard drive and install everything brand new.

If this computer had Vista on it then it is at probably around 11 years old. Don't think I would be putting much money into it.

Other information about the computer would include the complete specifications of the computer. It's history.

Other information about the computer would include the complete specifications of the computer. It's history. Where would i get a disk like that? Like judy said this computer may not be worth all the time and trouble as old as it is.

Songs is what i was coping from the original folder into another one. This way has always worked for me before. As far as installing it wont. It goes to the cmd prompt and thats all.

What kind of disk are you using? I hope a Full, legal Windows 7 disk and not an OEM disk. OEM disks are tied to the motherboard of the originating computer, meaning it is the copy of the operating system provided by the manufacturer when they built the computer and sold to the consumer. The OEM disk for this particular computer would be the OEM Vista disk that came with the computer when it was brand new. EDIT: When you say songs do you mean mp3 files that then PLAY on the computer or printed music sheets used when playing music on a musical instrument? Plus, yare you trying to do this on the computer you are trying to do the os reinstall? Why? Moving from one folder to another means nothing in this case they still will be lost when the reinstall is done.
If you want to save files and folders you need to move them OFF the computer like another hard drive or a USB stick or to the cloud. Sorry but this is a bit confusing.

Like judy said this computer may not be worth all the time and trouble as old as it is. If you have to ask where to find a self booting diagnostic disk, you should not be trying to repair computers. I agree with Judy that the computer may not be worth the time and effort required to repair it.

If you want to save files and folders you need to move them OFF the computer like another hard drive or a USB stick or to the cloud. Sorry but this is a bit confusing. Ok.... Word for word....heres the situation....i have a mp3 player. I have an external drive. I connected the external drive that contains the mp3s. What i wanted to do was copy only a chosen few of the mp3s to a folder to then move to my mp3 player. Saving the songs has nothing to do with why i was trying to reinstall.....thats completely after the fact of the copy and paste issue. In other words. I thought maybe if i reinstalled it would no longer have the issue and would make the task easier to do. The fact that it is doing what it is doing also has nothing to do with what im trying to copy and paste. I havent tried it but i know it would act exactly the same no matter what file i copied or what folder i copied it from. Basically a file is a file and a folder is a folder just as copy and paste operate the same way. Or are supposed too if their isnt something wrong somewhere preventing that.when a file is selected it wont deselect it once youre done with copy and paste. The only way to deselect it is exit the folder then reopen it and select the new file. I havent tried that either but know it would be the case.

Thanks. Ill take a look. Hope i figure this out soon. Im about ready to scrap it. Edit....me thinks its time to hang it up on this one. Too old anyway. Ill run across another decent computer somewhere. Always do...i had an almost new hp stream and sold it for $120 a couple hours ago as i hit a huge bird unfortunately over last weekend and busted my windshield. So thats why i sold it. Always wanted one too.lol. but they dont give new windshields away. Feel bad for the bird. Same night that happened i was more worried about the bird.he had no intention of hitting me or getting hit. Anyway thanks for everyones input but im not fooling with it anymore.

Well. I figured out what was wrong with its erratic behaviour just before i was ready to give up on it. It was the keyboard. Ordered another one and its supposed to get here by next monday.

How did you find the keyboard solution ? From that it is presumed you were using keys Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and paste. Maybe just your V got stuck Until the replacement keyboard arrives try right clicking with the mouse and selecting copy then paste
Also something else that was not mentioned before was to make sure your clipboard was cleared - can be done with CCleaner

Maybe just your V got stuck Until the replacement keyboard arrives try right clicking with the mouse and selecting copy then paste Also something else that was not mentioned before was to make sure your clipboard was cleared - can be done with CCleaner What made me come to the conclusion was when id click on start. The t would enter automatically until i hit backspace then it stopped. The t was sticking among other problems with the keyboard. I guess you just had to see what it was doing. When id copy something and paste it the previous file i copied would stay selected...then when id copy something else since the other one stayed selected...it would paste that file too....when id open a folder it would scroll up and down by itself. To test my theory the keyboard was bad i disconnected it. It then worked normal. So i ordered the keyboard and was supposed to get here this next monday..but i got it today....so its all good now. Edit....for copy and paste i do right click copy right click paste. I dont use keyboard shortcuts as theyre not actually shortcuts to me. The other way is.

Sorry but I find this confusing. If you did not use the keyboard to copy/paste then how could the keyboard cause problems copy/pasting? And if you disconnected the keyboard how could it work normal? How can a keyboard work at all if it is not connected to the computer?
