For some unknown reason I have lost my sound. I am running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. I can find a Realtek file but can`t open it. I have also tried to download a driver file from Realtek but it wont open either. I am at my wits end. Help would sure be appreciated. Thanks, Libijon

Have you fully rebooted the computer since this problem began? If you have not done a full reboot then do that first before attempting to change drivers.
Is this ALL sound including general sounds you may hear when opening programs, receiving emails and that type of thing or just one specific type of sound, hearing music, web sites, etc? What anti-virus and firewall are you using? Who is the mfgr of your computer? Very often the mfgr will have the drivers and means to install them on their web sites. Is you Windows 7 100% up to date with all of the most recent updates?
From what I have found the latest Realtek audio driver for Windows 7 is only for those that are 64bit systems. If yours is not 64bit then this could be the reason you cannot get it to open or install.

Sounds like there is a possibility the device has failed. Check in Device Manager. It should show there. Let me know. How old is this computer?
Do you have a recovery or driver disk that came with the computer?

It`s about 9 yrs. old. Nothing under Device manager, but when I go to control panel > all control panel items > programs and features , it has the Realtek HD Audio Driver, but only gives me an option to uninstall it.

What is the exact model of the Realtek card? The drivers are often model specific. What was the exact driver you tried to download and where did you get it?

Have you checked the speakers themselves?
I have had audio problems once myself, and the problem wound up being the speakers themselves, so I had to buy new ones.

I have updated the driver for the speakers and they seem to be okay. somehow my realtek audio manager is not responding. When I try to open it doesn`t respond, although it shows it in the control panel, but not under device manager. It says it is not installed.

I asked you if you had check Device Manager under the heading Sound, video and game controllers. Please reply to that specific question.
I also asked you where you got the RealteK driver?
Also again, do you have a recovery or driver disk that came with the computer?

No audio showing in the device manager at all. There is no listing for the heading "Sound, video and game controllers", it is completely gone. It does show Realtek HD Audio Manager in the Control Panel > hardware and Sound, but it wont open or doesn`t respond to right click to view properties for it. I downloaded 0008-Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R282_exe from the realtek download site. and tried to open it with the Driver Update and Remove for Windows x64 or x86_32 (Realtek Semiconductor Corp.) but nothing happened.

I found what you downloaded from the RealTek site but I did find this caution on their site;
This is the main reason why I have asked you several times if you have a Driver Disk from HP. If not then the Realtek recommendation for the drivers is to get them from the computer mfgr's site for the model of your computer. Have you got the disk? You would start with the original install of the device which would likely be on that disk. Those would be needed say if the computer had to be reformatted then the original device drivers would be installed and then updated after it is working if updates are available.

When I try to open it doesn`t respond, although it shows it in the control panel, but not under device manager. It says it is not installed. You didn't answer Nightowl's question - Have you tried the speakers on another computer? You say the "speakers seen to be OK". What does that mean? Do you hear sound from them. Does you computer have a sound card or is the sound card builtin on the motherboard? If the computer has a separate sound card is the seated properly (You will need to open computer case to check - remove it and re-seat it). I think the real solution will be obtaining and installing the proper sound card drivers as suggested by Judy. As Judy suggested your best bet will be getting them from the HP website if they are still available. But because of the age of the computer it may be difficult finding them. One last thought, it the sound card is a builtin card, you should check your CMOS settings to see if the sound card is activated. Bud

Like budgall I also wonder what you mean when you say the "speakers seen to be OK". How can you know this if the sound isn't working?
Can you give us a print screen of what you see when you open Device Manager, expand the option of sound, video and game controllers and further open Sound. Do a print screen of what is shown there and post it back here. Attachments:
