My laptop has been running slowly and freezing up at times and I was told to check the CPU temp. However, I do not want to download a program so wondered if there is a way to check it without a program?

Who told you to do this? There are many, many other things to check and do in order to figure out and correct a freezing problem on your laptop. CPU overheating is only one of many things that could cause this and it would not be the first thing I would check. Plus if the cpu is truly too hot chances are that it would shut down the computer not just freeze. There is only ONE way to check cpu temp in Winndows 10 without downloading a 3rd party program and that is by booting into BIOS as instructed in this link: www.wikihow.com/Monitor-CPU-TemperatureAre you comfortable doing this? It is not a simple process. There are several excellent free programs that will easily show you this. Why don't you want to try one? When you get the temperature you have to know the absolute correct temperature of your processor, do you? Is the computer and all the programs you use 100% up to date? Do you leave the computer running fully 24/7 or do you shut down at least weekly? I shut mine down every night but many leave theirs running much of the time. But rebooting at least weekly clears your PC's memory and closes all software that may be running in the background. Too many programs running at the same time can certainly be a cause of freezes and slow downs.
Do you do regular weekly maintenance on the computer? Does this happen no matter what you are doing? Does it freeze both on and offline? What browser do you use? What anti-virus program do you use?

I am not comfortable with doing tech stuff on the computer.
This is also the problem I have: This LT seems to run 'ok' when I am using it for a while.
When I leave it for an hour or more, it runs very slowly--sometimes it takes 15-20 seconds to open a page that is already showing.
The curser also jumps all around almost every day when I try to move it to point to something on a website.
I just want to know if the problems may be my server (Century Link--is the pits) or if the LT is pooping out?
Today--after not using it for an hour or so(but still on) it took more than 30 seconds to open up a page--it seems 'frozen' although the curser still moves.
Now to answer your questions: Are you comfortable doing this? It is not a simple process. There are several excellent free programs that will easily show you this. Why don't you want to try one?
When you get the temperature you have to know the absolute correct temperature of your processor, do you?
Is the computer and all the programs you use 100% up to date? ===I believe so but do not know how to check. I let WIN 10 do their thing as well as Avira.
Do you leave the computer running fully 24/7 or do you shut down at least weekly?== I shut mine down every night but many leave theirs running much of the time. But rebooting at least weekly clears your PC's memory and closes all software that may be running in the background. Too many programs running at the same time can certainly be a cause of freezes and slow downs.
Do you do regular weekly maintenance on the computer?==I use ccleaner
Does this happen no matter what you are doing?==yes
Does it freeze both on and offline?==don't think so since I am online only when I use the LT
What browser do you use? What anti-virus program do you use? ==Google Chrome and Avira

So for maintenance you only use CCleaner and scan with Avira? Do you use Malwarebytes? Open CCleaner and go to Tools, Click on Startup. Now in the bottom right corner is a blue button that says Save to Text file. Do this and then copy/paste that text file here in your next reply. Edit: The cursor jumping around could be caused by your hand rubbing against the touch pad. Are you using a mouse? If so turn the touch pad Off. I do not think this is your ISP but try another browser just to see if it also lags. I would suggest EDGE it is included with Windows 10 and is very fast. Is Chrome up to date? How many extensions do you have on it? Attachments:

Ok now--I did the CCleaner as you said and it shows "System 32" but will not C&P.--a suggestion how to do this? I do use Malwarebytes--it is automatically scanned (paid subscription) Chrome is up to date and I have 5 extensions open. The touch pad has been disabled for months since someone here told me how to do that; I use a mouse.

The touch pad has been disabled for months since someone here told me how to do that; I use a mouse. I am sorry but I don't understand what you mean by CCleaner showing System 32. What are you talking about? All I asked you to do is exactly what is shown in my attachment. If you go to Tools, Start up and then click on Save to Text file. All that is doing is giving a list of what programs are listed in Start up and if they are enabled to auto start and therefore running all the time. I did NOT ask for the contents of the entire System 32 folder which is a huge folder containing Windows System Files, Program Files needed to run the computer. All I want are Auto Starting Programs. You may have unnecessary programs that are starting and running that slow the computer. You tell it where to save the text file. Then OPEN the text file and go to Edit, Select All, Copy. Everything will be highlighted and then open a reply here, place the cursor into the reply and then right click and choose Paste. The information will be posted here.

If you still wish to check the temperature of your laptop there are only two ways of doing this. By delving Into BIOS instructions for which a link has already been provided or by means of a 3rd party program. As you are not comfortable with BIOS and will not use another program then there is no other way of checking. I agree that overheating is just one of many problems that could be affecting your laptop’s performance. My first suggestion would be to try an alternative browser which has been suggested to you before and if that works ok then something in your Chrome is amiss. CCleaner.com provide an app called Speccy (there is a free version )which would easily do the job of temperature checking if you decided to install it www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Looking back at our previous thread perhaps you should look again at the unchecking of accelerate hardware in Chrome as it worked for you before and possibly has become checked again through an update. - Reply#1 here newworldtech.freeforums.net/thread/573/diagnosis-laptop-problemWhile you are there in Advanced Settings scroll right down to the bottom to Advanced Settings and then down again to 'Clear Browsing Data' There are two tabs there - select the "advanced ' one and check all but the last 5 items to clear. You need to decide yourself about those 5 as they include saved passwords and form data. It is also possible to reset Chrome back to the default settings without loosing saved passwords This explains it better than I could support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?visit_id=636739031485786682-2566082808&p=ui_reset_settings&rd=1 Experimenting with another browser such as Edge as suggested would determine whether it is your Chrome browser or something else that is causing the problem.
I do think you also need to carry on with the startup list and get that sorted out as well. Too many unecessary things starting up can cause problems especially in an older machine.
You did nor answer jholland's question about whether you shut down every night ?
Also be aware that with windows 10 there is a feature called 'Fast Startup' which is used when you shut down and then reboot. This is different to previous OS's.
Your machine does not fully close down when you shut down with Fast Start Up enabled (and it is by default) and the benefit of this is that booting up is faster.
To completely shut down and restart the 'Restart' is the way to go and this can often clear any slowing down problems.
If you do decide to disable Fast Start Up make sure to click on 'Save Changes' at the bottom of the page.It is easy to miss.

Hello again, Everton. Yes--I do turn off and unplug this LT every evening. However the yellow ethernet cord is always plugged in. I have a computer friend coming by this week sometime so will have him help me with your current suggestions above^^^. Thank you.
