This AM I had a Windows 10 notification that my Windows 10 computer was not activated despite the fact that it has been activated since Microsoft released Windows 10. The computer previously had Windows 8.1 on it and was updated with the free update Microsoft offered years ago. I tried the Windows activation troubleshooter to fix the problem which did not work. I then tried to use my old Windows 8.1 license key to reactivate the license. Again without success. I then tried calling the activation service phone number and tried the suggestions offered. Again no luck. I again called the activation service phone number attempting to reach a human, after over 90 minutes I got a live person on the phone with very heavy Indian accent and very difficult to understand only to find out that the Microsoft activation servers are having issues and should be back up and running in 24 hours.
The computer in question is running Build 1809 17763.55 which is the October 2018 update that Microsoft pulled and has not yet re-released. My original thoughts that the deactivation was because I am running the October 2018 update as the most recent Microsoft Preview Fast Track build 1809 18277.1000
also reported the its license was invalid, however the Windows activation troubleshooter fixed the problem when I ran it.
Anyways, if you are having a Windows activation problem wait another 24 hours and hopefully it will fix itself.
UPDATE: Microsoft has now fixed this issue. It effected only Windows 10 Pro licenses. The fix requires you to run the Windows license troubleshooter. After running you should be activated again. I an now reactivated
