I have to agree with that. I live in Alameda, CA a island between Oakland and San Francisco and the smoke from the Northern California fires is very visible and the air quality is very bad. We are about 175 miles south of the Northern California fires. Where in California does Phil live?
Major damage and thousands of homes have burned in both the Northern and Southern California fires. High winds and lack of rain have not helped. Northern California rain fall is less than one-half inch in the last 200 plus days.

He lives about 50 miles away from the nearest fire. |
