I need to change the volume on my laptop but repeatedly clicking the sound icon does not open it up. (it used to) I went into 'control panel--sounds' but that does not show volume. Is there another way to find the volume so I can adjust it? Thank you.

I assume your sound is still functioning, making it a graphics issue rather than a sound problem ?
If you can see anything when you right click on the speaker icon you can open the volume mixer from there and use it as an alernative. It should be the first item listed. I have had this happen a few times- right or left clicking the icon does nothing at all- and the quickest and easiest way I have found to fix it is by restarting Windows Explorer via Task Manager. Right click on the Start Button to locate Task manager. Click to open. In the Processes Tab scroll all the way down to 'Windows Processes' Find Windows Explorer by scrolling down again and right click on the icon - from there select Restart. Don't be alarmed when everything disappears for a few seconds - once all reloads your speakers icon should work once more. Wait until everything fully loads. Click on my attachments to open them to full size.
The same can be achieved by restarting your computer. Not shutting down and booting up again - it needs to be a Restart, but this way is quicker.

Thank you , BB and Everton. A few days ago, I did what Budgall suggested and asked Google. Several videos came up but I was not able to understand the accented directions. So I found a simple explanation and did what it said and now I have the volume bar back. But--I will keep your instructions, Everton, and try that next time. These computers have a mind of their own

I don't know how I fixed it because after trying to understand the garbled videos, I just followed a Google answer. It wasn't difficult and the volume bar came back.
