If I'm not here much it's not through choice the storm is awful. Town is cut off, Council are out sandbagging and some houses evacuated. State of emergency further up the coast and sirens going off all the time. We live up on a hill and can not see much of what us going on through the weather. It's a wee bit scary ! Power off in some places so hoping we escape that.
It's got worse Civil defense out in full force and my town now also in State of Emergency. We are safe up the hill but many will spend a very worrying night. We have candles and torches on hand and phones charged up. The wind is ferocious as well. A months average rain fall in 8 hours. If you have Facebook search a page called Oamaru Today to see a bit of what it was like in daylight.
I have never known rain like it! At present is is not showing any signs of easing up.
The poor folk down on the flat. I just heard they have now run out of sandbags and are waiting for more to arrive from further south by unimog but doubt they will get through. We just have a flooded basement, so are considering ourselves very fortunate. Power is still on but flickers every so often. One of our sons and his family are in the air somewhere between here and Thailand on their way home but the airport is closed so not sure where they will end up.
Another son is at the British Open at Birkdale and was complaining a few hours ago about a bit of wind ! Said he had to shelter in a hospitality tent - yea, right! Those winds can make one very thirsty
