In my old laptop, a Lenovo E520 Thinkpad, the background colors in folders (My documents, etc) has suddenly changed from white with black letters to black with white letters. I did nothing to change these colors but I can't find how to go back to my preferred arrangement. The computer is running Windows 10 Professional, version 1809. I have tried Google for a remedy but it seems to require the installation of a new program! Does anyone have a solution?

Right click on desktop and select Personalize at the bottom of the drop down menu. Then choose Themes. Next scroll down and choose High Contrast Settings. When that opens, Turn it off.
You can accomplish the same by hitting Alt + left Shift + Print Screen.

I did that but it doesn't work, the background is still black. I'll try rebooting to see if that helps.

The rule of thumb is Always reboot after you have made a change. You honestly didn't tell us much except what you were seeing. Did this happen while you were using the computer? Did this happen when you first rebooted the computer?
Have you installed any new software?
Have you updated any software?
Have you visited a web page you have never visited before?
We also need info on the computer besides OS. You say this is your "old" computer, does this mean this has not been used in a long time? This model is no longer for sale, when you purchased it did it have Windows 10 on it or did you upgrade to Windows 10?

You didn't answer any of my questions. We ask these questions for a good reason because it may help remedy the situation. Without the answers I have no other suggestions

This computer originally had Windows 7, it was upgraded to Windows 10 when that OS came out. I have used it sporadically for months and the only software installed were the latest Quicken program and the update to version 1809 of Windows 10. I have been keeping Quicken up to date as a backup to my current laptop. It appears to me that this changeover possibly occurred when I updated to 1809 but I am not sure. Sorry about not replying to your questions earlier but I was not on the computer for hours.

Thanks for answering my questions. When did you receive the 1809 update? It had originally been scheduled for release back in October but Microsoft pulled the upgrade when people had problems with it, though what you are experiencing was Not one of those problems. Of course that doesn't mean it couldn't be the cause but it hasn't been listed anywhere that I could find.
It was finally re-released in January with a slow roll out. Some folks got it immediately and others have waited and some are still waiting. Manual updates are still really not recommended. Did you receive it automatically or manually and as I asked, when did you receive it?
You had an earlier thread this week about Tunnel Bear, was this installed on this computer or another one?
Have you used the "Screen Magnifier" to zoom-in on blocks of text?

Go back to personalize via right click desktop Click on ‘colours’ Scroll down to ‘more options’ Select the light option. Terrific! That did the trick, it's now white with black letters! Thanks a million!

I installed 1809 2 weeks ago, manually, on both of my laptops; I did not install Tunnel Bear on the Lenovo and I have never used the magnifier. See my reply to Everton who had the solution. Thanks for your help.

Glad to help I was familiar with the glitch because the same thing occurred on my laptop after the 1809 upgrade. Both my machines were ok with the original update installed before MS pulled it. Desktop pc was normal, laptop displayed the dark theme until I figured out how to change it. It has remained light ever since
