I still have not got the 1809 update yet. I now have 20 GB a month so easily able to download it. Someone suggested I just forget about it as 1903 is due very soon but I may have to download the update assistant, is that correct? I still leave it as a metered connection so should that stop either 1809 or 1903 coming as an update? I still have a very bad internet connection where we live but unfortunately this is the only Telco I am able to get.

The update suggestions in Judy's post do work as I have updated peoples computers using them. However a warning, I did have one attempt fail to complete its update and was forced roll the failed update back to 1803.

Sorry totally forgot to return to see if any answers. I have been getting updates for 1803 only. I have now changed to unmetered to see if anything happens. Really need to get on either late at night or early morning to see if any updates come. My latest was the Cumulative update ( KB4489894 ) on the 27th. I do remember back in 2017 going to the Win 10 update page & downloading the big update available then. Was able to use my brothers data but was interstate at the time. Read the suggestions u added but all double Dutch to me. Am I able to Download the Update assistant & take it from there or not advisable to do so? Really don't want to have to pay my tech to do it.

You can try whatever you need to do to get this update. I have to say it sounds as if you have your computer turned on only a couple hours a day, which is your problem. The updates don't have time to be offered or downloaded if you have the computer turned on only a few hours a day.
I am surpised that you waited this long to change to unmetered connection because you were told back on November 13th by Everton that this likely was the reason you don't receive updates in a timely manner;

In November I still had only 1.5 GB a month & it was not till a week before Xmas I saw this better deal & changed to it only now having enough data (20 GB ) a month to download big updates. And u are right I only turn my computer on to do whatever I need to do. I use my mobile phone as a HOT SPOT to connect to the internet & did not realize the update was not offered etc like the other updates. Unfortunately the old saying with "age comes wisdom" does not seem to apply to me these days.

Not really sure what you mean about the update was not offered like other updates, essentially all updates are offered the very same way but the computer has to be online in order to receive them. If you have the computer online only an hour or two a day then you are certainly cutting the odds that you will receive them because if the computer is offline during the time that MS is trying to give that update to you then of course you won't receive it. I don't believe using the phone as a hot spot would affect that at all. I could be wrong as I have never done that. Somebody else will have to respond to that.

I am not sure if you ever tried doing this, as suggested last year
I would have thought if you have done so and the update is still not downloading then there must be a reason for that - either there is something preventing your pc from being compatible with the update (eg an incompatible driver) or you do not have sufficient space to allow the download and installation. The download should be no more than 4GB so you have plenty of data.

Thanks for the help, did not realize needed my computer on most of the time to receive updates. Usually just check when I come on line. Today got a Win 10 update KB4023057 . Also noticed I only have the active hours set 10 am to 4 pm. Unfortunately not able to get a signal in all rooms of our house so with using my phone as a Hot spot can't have it connected to laptop all the time when home. Sorry I am a right pain in the backside, comes with age.

The active hours you have set are the hours during which your machine will not automatically restart as required for many updates but should not prevent an update from downloading and installing inside or outside of those hours provided you are connected to the internet. Within those hours you will be asked if you want to restart manually. Just keep checking for updates when you go online. You will need to stay online while the update downloads which in the case of a large one could be some time. It will be indicated on the download page what is downloading and the percentage will be shown as it progresses.

I always check for updates when I come online. That update failed twice to download the other day. Have 376 GB space left so no problem & yes I always stay on when any updates downloading. Was just checking & noticed that that update KB4023057 downloaded on 20.3.19. Explains why it's not showing up again. Will have to try budgall's suggestion & see what happens.

I’m sorry I do not understand. You said you received that update on 07/04/19. That is why I posted the description of its contents as it seemed relevant to the update to 1809. In this post you say you received on 20/03/19.
Don't forget to make a backup before updating to 1809. If you decide to update using the Update Assistant your machine will be checked for hardware and software compatibility before the download begins. After download there will be a restart required to start the installation, and another one soon after. Depending on your download speed the time for the whole procedure could be 2 to 3 hours. Mine was closer to 3 as my connection is not super fast, but it was not done via Update Assistant..
Good luck.

Yes looking again can see why u are confused, the 20.3.19 was 2019-03 & the other day was 2019-04. Has not come up again so far. Re doing a backup think last time I did one was with Vista so have totally forgotten how to go about it. I have found some DVD+R CD's 4.7 GB, 16x speed, 120 minutes. Are these ok & if so how many should it take? I'm over 70 so things are not as clear as they were & no kids etc to ask for help. My laptop is an Aspire E 15, E5-521-45BU about 5 years old. Another question should I be able to play DVD's on it? So far no luck but will play CD's. Definitely need all the luck u can send. Oh another question where do I go to add all my computer info at the bottom.

Your computer will play DVD's IF you have a CD/DVD player. Not all computers have the capability of playing DVD's If you cannot play DVD's then maybe this doesn't have a CD/DVD drive but only a CD drive. If that is the case then you couldn't use those DVD+R to make backup. You'd have to have CD+R to do that IF the drive is also a burner. To add your computer info click on your Name. When that opens click Edit Profile. When that opens click Personal and when that opens scroll down to the Signature box and type in your computer info. When finished click the Save button at the bottom

I have never backed up to cd's except for copying photos. I don't think it would be suitable to do a complete system backup to discs but you could easily copy your documents and photos. They would be the same size on the backup disk as they are on your laptop so you need to calculate how many you would need. I have been unable to ascertain whether your model has a dvd drive or a cd drive. Either would be suitable for copying to. You can simply copy and then paste them to the disc or use the Save Backup Copies of Your Files with File History link in the Control Panel. There are easy instructions here www.dummies.com/consumer-electronics/tablets/for-seniors-back-up-files-to-a-laptops-cddvd-drive/
