Dear Friends, My friend has a brand new Windows 10 HP laptop. Model# 15-BS212WM During setup does he need an email account? Wants to be able browse the Internet without having an email account. I wasn't sure what to tell him. ANY help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thank You! Raphael

No email account required however during setup Microsoft will push for you to create a Microsoft account which is really an email account and also how they would like you to log on to the computer. If I remember correctly you can skip this process and create a local account when Microsoft is requesting the Microsoft account info. Read the screens carefully.
You could also setup the Microsoft account during setup and then never use the email account except to log on to the computer.

Thank You! What do you mean by this? "create a local account" Due to the fact that his ex-spouse hosed the desktop..he has no Internet account with Comcast. He'll likely get to that later in another month or so when the dust and dirt settles.

Here's one way to install with a local account. I've never installed or set up a computer without an internet connection so I don't know if one is required. Seeing its a laptop, he could bring it somewhere where an internet connection is available if needed. 4sysops.com/archives/install-windows-10-with-a-local-account

I have been asked before and I always decline.
This article should give you an idea what a local account is.

Thank You! He does still get phone and TV through Comcast, But he had the Internet stopped IIRC in order to save money and an uncertain future. He will relocate and that is when he would set up an Internet connection., etc... You said: "He does not need to have email, many people do not but do use the internet, however in order to do this then he does have to sign up with an internet provider."So, where could Comcastic fit into this scenario? I will steer him away from AOL no problem. Since the merger the SPAM at least for now is off the charts..It's on the bottom of the list of their priorities..Improved, but its got a ways to go. Bloated... Your thoughts and I'll pass them along. Sincerely, Ralph

Bundling the three should save money.
Not sure which AOL merger you're talking about, there have been several and it is still failing for the most part, right now it is part of Verizon Media. AOL has always been bloated in my opinion, know it has its fans but I've never been one. Truly have had more trouble cleaning AOL computers than any others over the years.

Judy Thank YOU! Some of us apparently like punishment re: AOL (lol) The Verizon one is the latest IIRC. So our friend could contact Comcast and set it back up as it was before his desktop got destroyed by some kind of virus!? The desktop is long gone... But, is the above necessary to browse the Net as I mentioned earlier? Honestly I'm confused about this cause I've never been in this position.. and never advised anyone about it. Probably a good thing too.. Please just keep it as simple as possible for us so-called dummies. Take care, Ralph

If you did NOT have internet then you could not be online period.
IF he keeps Comcast TV & phone then it would very likely be cheaper for him to use their internet when he chooses.
Whether his desktop was destroyed by a virus is immaterial to any of this so forget about it. Consider it dead and buried.
Comcast also had nothing to do with it.
Also wonder what you mean by "IIRC" I have never seen this term for ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Thank You! Yes, I'm okay with Comcast/AOL.,etc... Larry is not..he's wondering about these things. I thought he needed an ISP of some sort to browse the Net without an email address.
IIRC means "If I Recall Correctly"
Sincerely, Ralph

He DOES need an ISP, to browse the internet AND use email if he so chooses, that is what you use to do either or both. Comcast would be his ISP if he chooses to use it. There are of course other options for an ISP, depending on where he lives but if he is using Comcast for TV & Phone then it would likely be cheaper to also use Comcast for internet too.

In order to browse the internet which you state he wishes to do, he will, as others have said, need to have an ISP. He does not need to set up an email account wih that ISP. In fact Microsoft would like you to set up a webmail account with outlook.com. It's free if you just go to outlook.com and set up a new mail account. You'll need to do this from a computer with an already established internet connection. Once you have an account such as JoeBlow@outlook.com then you can use it during the Windows 10 set up for your login. You do not have to use the mail account.
