Hi everyone. Im trying to help a friend with his computer. He said it was working fine and he brought up a facebook game. About halfway it froze then couldnt reboot. It goes to the start screen then the arrow. The circle starts spinning then stops. It does that later part over and over in about 30 second intervals. This is a windows 7 computer home built....the bios has settings that show it originally had windows 8. Is it likely that somehow the configuration got changed and thats why it wont boot? Or? Its a desktop computer.

What have you tried to do to fix it? Do you have the original Windows 7 CD? What screen do you consider to be the start screen? What is the arrow you say displays? Any error messages? Have you tried repairing the MBR (Master Boot Record)? How old is computer? How old is Hard Drive? Do you have a backup?

Does not sound like it has even been fully turned off. Can he boot to Safe Mode? What was the game? Has he played this game before without difficulty? I find it rather confusing when you say it was home built but shows the os in bios as Windows 8 but he is running Windows 7. Was this built with used parts or something?

I guess it was built with used parts. I didnt ask.the bios showed 8. So something went wrong and installed 7 maybe. The game was a facebook poker game Hes played it many times.....but when he shuts it down he just presses the button.....a no no......rather that shut it down properly.....thats probably what caused the problem. My cousin that installed 10 on it ran checkdisk....it found errors and fixed them. After the install it worked fine.

By the way.....yes....he got to safemode....which also confuses me....because i would try and it wouldnt......it would just go through the same startup process and hang. You could apply any setting and it would restart to the same screen as before.i think maybe it was the order my cousin did things in the reason it worked for him and not me.....everyone ive ever had though once you apply something in the bios it does what you tell it to.

Must have been something incorrect about the way you pressed whatever it was.
There is no way that Windows 7 could have been installed without using a Windows 7 install disk. 7 and 8 are two completely different operating systems so obviously who ever built this had to have installed 7.
To boot to safe mode in Windows 7 you do these steps, if you didn't then you didn't do it right:
Press F8 Before the Windows 7 Splash Screen enter Advanced Boot Options. Once in Advanced options there are three choices; Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Use the arrow keys to choose which one you want and then hit Enter. Wait for Windows 7 Files to Load and then Log In With an Administrator Account
It is a good thing your cousin installed Windows 10 because Windows 7 reaches the end of it's Life Cycle in January 2020 and will no longer be supported at all. No updates, security or otherwise.
I know this also is what you customarily install on computers you buy and fix up and you should stop doing that and go with Windows 8.1, which has support until 2023 or go to 10 with its life cycle end set now at October 2025.

Glad to hear the problem got solved.
Highly recommend that you you get your friend to make regular backups. I do a full system daily backup on 5 computers using Ashampoo Backup Pro 12 every night to a network attached NAS.
