If I uninstall Office 2003 it'll be for LibreOffice (which is already installed), not one of Microsoft's exorbitantly priced products. Having said that, what would be a good replacement for Outlook, which will allow me to keep my absurdly large collection of saved emails? The 1903 update appears to be running OK on the laptop. Paul,
I use my internet provider email as my main client.

Since I installed the update to 1903, some of the windows which open in Windows are now white text on a black background. How do I revert to normal, i.e. black text on a white background?

Go to Personalisation in Settings and click on Colours in the left pane then
in the right pane select "Light" where it says to choose your default app mode

The Windows 10 Mail app which you already have and is a simplified version of Outlook may also be a consideration.
Libre Office is great but I am finding I am using the built in MS WordPad more for the simple requirements I have. It is found in Windows Accessories in the Start Menu. I have it pinned to taskbar for quick access.

Another flexible text editor similar to WordPad is Jarte. Check it out.

My greatest need for replacement is for Excel, not Word. I am already using LibreOffice for one spreadsheet excel will no longer open.

Another free option is Open Office. I have used both Libre and Open Office and liked them both and both did open spreadsheets created with Excel. You have to make absolutely certain that the spreadsheets created with Excel are not protected in order to open them with other Office type suites. So check to see if the spreadsheet is protected, if it is then un-protect it and it should open.

I'm happy to stay with LibreOffice, but it doesn't have an email client, hence the later question. I shall try Thunderbird. I had a quick look at Windows 10 Mail and on first impression (perhaps unfairly) I wasn't greatly impressed. I have used Outlook 2003 and its predecessors since Adam wore short pants and am a little wary of moving on.

The only problem with Outlook Email is that you cannot move the old saved email to another program. Outlook Mails are kept in what are called .pst files. Pst stands for Personal Storage and this is a is in what’s called a “proprietary format”. That means that only Outlook can actually open it. I know you said you have what you called an " an absurdly large collection of saved emails" but, I'm sorry, without upgrading to Outlook 2013 at least those will be lost.

Couldn't saved outlook emails be forwarded to a gmail or outlook.com address? They could then be read and saved in Thunderbird.

Couldn't saved outlook emails be forwarded to a gmail or outlook.com address? They could then be read and saved in Thunderbird. A couple of thousand of them? No, thanks. And they would all appear with me as the sender. Even with a severe purge I doubt if I could get below 500. I have emails over 10 years old that I don't want to lose. With one small unimportant exception Outlook 2003 is functioning fine for me. I shall investigate later versions, but if what Judy says is correct, and I'm not suggesting for a moment she isn't, then Outlook in whatever version seems to be the only option. But thanks for trying anyway.

There is NO guarantee this will work and because Paul has stated that he has "an absurdly large collection of saved emails" if it does work it will likely take a very, very long time.
EDIT: If Outlook 2003 works for you now then of course you can continue to use it. Just be aware that sooner or later it WILL fail so if I were you I would certainly begin looking at other options. I don't know what email provider you use but one other option IS, as suggested earlier by Barney is to access the mail via the providers online email. You could save copies there for sure though the amount of space might be limited.

I haven't looked but I'm sure someone somewhere has written a program that will read the Outlook 2003 files and convert them into a format usable with modern email clients. I would suggest a Google search.

I'm still on Winver 1809 on our 3 Windows 10 computers and haven't been offered the 1903 update.
This may seem like a novice question, but should I check for updates or wait until it's offered to me?
Thanks, Mary

Thanks, Mary Mary, if you had read the entire thread you would have seen that with this update users must visit Windows Update and click "Check for Updates" to be offered version 1903. It may not happen at once but check daily until it is offered and then you must choose to download and install the update when it is offered to you

You're welcome. Also Mary, be aware that the new ‘Download and install now’ capability is available for devices running Windows 10, version 1803 or version 1809 that also have the May 21st updates (or later) installed. So be sure to check your update history on all three machines to be certain that you DO have all updates from May 21st forward installed. If you do not then you will not get the offer for v. 1903.
Microsoft also has released a video explaining all you need to know about how to receive this update:

Mary, a question, why is it that you continually quote a person's post with no reply of your own? You have done this twice now with your reply/quote#46 and then again just now with your reply/quote #49 Frankly that is somewhat a waste of valuable forum space. You certainly may quote a post you wish to comment on but make your post then in the same reply, beneath the quoted material.

Judy-
I ran check for updates on all 3 computers and I had several updates before being offered version 1903 on the 2 laptop computers. I updated those 2 laptops and it went fine. The 3rd (desktop) computer wasn't offered version 1903 yet, so I'm assuming it will get that at a later date.
Thanks again for all your advice, Mary

Sorry As far as your 3rd computer not yet receiving the update, as you say, it WILL come. Just keep checking. Glad the others went well.
Not incorrect, just wasted space. It is not necessary nor a requirement to quote the person you are replying to though sometimes that helps others who are reading along but if you do then do the quote and then drop right down in that same reply and make your reply.
Please look at the attached to see exactly what I am describing above;

I have office 2000 installed on this laptop and just got the 1903 update a couple of days ago. It has always worked like it should. When it doesn't work at all, I will remove it and go with something else. I very seldom use any of it. Do have my passwords on an excel spreed sheet and just checked and it is fine.

This should probably have been a separate thread. Apologies.
I updated Office to 2016. I couldn't believe just how painless it was. It found my Outlook .pst files. All I had to do was reinstall OfficeTab for Excel and Word.

Windows 10/1903 came along last night pretty painlessly - just one manual restart required this morning which didn't take long to run. Ultramon and IrfanView were a bit skittish when first run but have both settled down. And I don't know why I didn't upgrade Office years ago!

Glad all went well Paul. Honestly have not seen anyone, here at least, who had any problems with this upgrade to 1903. Also glad your upgrade of Office was well worth it, thought it would be. I upgraded several years back and I also wondered why I had waited so long.
