Since February 2019 I have been trying to update an optional update for my HP USB driver and it fails! Do I really need it? My printer (HP Envy 5600 is working just fine).
Windows Update encountered an unknown error....Code 800F020B FAILED
Hewlett Packard USB driver update released in February 2019 40.13.1167.1948 21.2 MB 2/18/2019
Thank You! Marie

Am I correct in presuming that this update is being offered via Windows Update and not via HP? My advice is you do not need and should not want printer driver updates from Windows Update. Normally, when Windows Update offers drivers, these updates are categorized as "Optional" and most people correctly ignore them If your printer is working properly, there is no good reason to update the driver and then go through HP not Windows.
Despite what many say, you really don't need to update drivers, especially printer drivers, unless you are having some sort of problem with a the printer. The old rule, "if it ain't broke, then don't fix it" applies especially to drivers. Now if you ARE having problems with something like a printer, scanner, something like that then go to the printers manufacturers web site to get the drivers, not Windows.
If you do need a driver or believe you do then go to this link to get it;

I agree completely that unless a device is not working properly then drivers should be left alone and if needed acquired from the manufacturer.
The error code 800F020B for the failed update signifies that the printer was not connected when the update was attempted.

Adding my 2 cents (do people still use that expression?): Great advice from the 2 administrators. First, entering error messages in Google often provide more information on what they mean. Second, I've learned that you can often ignore error messages if everything is working well. In the past I've wasted time fixing the "error," but when I do nothing, the error message will disappear after various Windows updates. Almost funny (if you can call computer aggravation humorous), I noticed Windows updates were available, but couldn't update--getting an error message instead (omitting message and meaning). A couple of weeks later Windows updated on its own and the error message disappeared.
Additional tip as people here have commented: Wait until MS tells you they have an update for you and don't try updating just b/c you learn one is around. J
