I have mine set to check for and then auto update when one is available and therefore received this update late this afternoon.

According to your signature, your version of Firefox is WAY out of date. The latest version is 67.0.3.

That IS the new update number, previous number released June 11 was 67.0.2
If your version showed as 67.0.3 then you had already unknowingly received the update before you checked to see what your version number was.
Note these links with the update info:

Corrected several signature errors to reflect actual status of software used.... Thanks for reminder to do the housekeeping chores....

A further update 67.0.4 has been released.
Impact Rated 'High" Since my Firefox is set to automatically update mine received this update automatically late last night just before I shut down my computer for the night. I strongly suggest that all Firefox users set their browser to automatically update when new updates are released. It is one of the safest browsers available and if you have it set to auto update then you really are using the browser to the fullest and safest extent possible.
I have had mine set to auto update since the first day I began using it many years ago. I only recall one time in maybe 15 years where I had a problem with an update and that was corrected within 24 hours.

Mine is set to check for updates and let me choose to install them. This setting is in Options/Firefox Updates if anyone wants to check theirs. As soon as I opened Firefox this evening there was a message advising me of the update which I immediately allowed to be downloaded and installed. I prefer not to have a background service started up when my browser is closed in order to download an update. I would rather do that myself. Call me a control freak I believe the default setting is to automatically install so it is likely most people do so.

There is only one background service that comes with both Firefox and Thunderbird and that is the Mozilla Maintenance Service. It doesn't run in the background all the time or when those applications are closed. It only runs when an update is done and once the update is finished it is closed so it doesn't use any resources unless an update is being done.
You can uninstall this entirely if you wish but my feeling since it only runs when an update is being done there is no reason to remove it. Without this installed then when a user installs into the default Program Files directory, updates cannot be applied without us first prompting the user for elevated permissions with a User Account Control (UAC) dialog.
To each his own of course.
