I recently started getting (about 3 weeks ago) when I select malwarebytes to run for my monthly cleanup an error message that it cannot connect to the service. I downloaded and installed the latest version and still get the error message.

I just Googled "malwarebytes cannot connect to the service" and found lots of suggestions on how to fix problem. I didn't read them but I'm sure a solution can be found as a lot said problem was resolved.

Did you completely uninstall the first version before installing the new one or did you install over the top?

My guess is that the Malwarebytes service is not set to automatic, go to services change it to automatic and restart the service.

My guess is that the Malwarebytes service is not set to automatic, go to services change it to automatic and restart the service. Unless the OP is using the paid version of Malwarebytes, which of course runs all the time, the Free version Malwarebytes' service should be set to manual and it will start up when the program is started.
Very often this is caused by corrupt files within the program which does not manually start the service when it should. Even though the program was reinstalled it is recommended on Malwarebytes' Forum to use the
Once the tool is downloaded, save all your work and restart your computer. Once the computer is fully booted open the Malwarebytes' Support Tool and accept the license terms and proceed. Click on Advanced and then select only the Clean button. Please select the Yes button when a window asks if you want to reinstall the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
After the reinstall has completed, please restart the computer once again. Then try to run Malwarebytes' again and see if it works.

jholland---I ran the tool as you suggested and after it reinstalled it ran as I am used to it doing. Thank you so much! Paul Oh you are so welcome, I was pretty sure it would work. That Malwarebytes' Support Tool has been available since April 2018.
As I said in my post, the suggestion came directly from Malwarebytes' themselves. One reason I have always liked the program because if people are having trouble with it for some reason, paid or Free version, they WILL fix it and do it as quickly as possible. Their forum is invaluable for both paid and Free users. Anybody can join and post a question if they are having problems with the program. They have certainly helped me several times over the years and I have always used the Free version, which, they always stress will ALWAYS be available.
