The free update to Windows 10 is still available and requires only a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8 license key. I did this process last week to my last Windows 7 computer. If your computer was my computer I would update it to Windows 10 via the media creation tool. If or when the process requests the Windows 10 key, tell the install program you do not have one. The update should continue to completion. Once the computer is updated go to settings > update > activation > change product key and enter your Windows 7 product key. Your Windows 10 should now be activated. If for some reason the Widows 10 update fails, the install program should roll back the computer to Windows 7. I also would not object to you not upgrading the computer at all and leaving it on Windows 7. Good computer usage and being a "100% safe user" as well as maintaining the necessary security software should all that's needed. The world is not going to end because Microsoft has stopped providing security updates to Windows 7. There still are millions of users running Windows XP safely out there who have not had security updates for years now. Where can you get xp? My favorite is windows 7.....back when i had xp i loved it.....but ive had windows 10 running 8 gb. RAM. And its as slow as christmas.....for that reason and the fact i just dont like 10...for other reasons.....ill never have 10 again.

Did this computer come, brand new with Windows 10 on it or was it upgraded from something else? Windows 10 is designed to run faster than the previous versions of Windows. So it is faster than 7. But 10 requires more hardware resources than 7. If you are running Windows 10 on an older computer with an older hardware set up then it WILL be slower because the computer was not built to run Windows 10.
Speed does NOT depend solely on the amount of RAM in a computer, OR the operating system. How much is running in the background? How up to date are ALL hardware drivers? What processor is on the computer? Is the os 100% up to date? How much space is remaining on the hard drive?
Is is slow both online and off line? How many auto starts do you have? How many of them run all the time? Most programs do NOT have to auto start and do not have to run all the time.
You probably can find an old xp computer some place or an old xp disk at some swap shop or something but of course you likely will not be able to update it past what is on the disk but of course you likely cannot use any of the programs you have been using...they were not built for xp. I honestly don't know that xp would even work on a computer built for Windows 10. Just like not being able to run xp programs on 10, they are not going to work.

The laptop originally had 7. I tried to find all updated drivers but some i couldnt find.....the laptop is around 5-6 years old.....that must be the problem if 10 runs faster.

Come on, you have been on forums long enough to "know the drill". You say you tried to find updated drivers but some you couldn't find. That tells us virtually nothing if you really want assistance. What drivers? Who are the driver manufacturers? What versions are on the computer? Where did you look for these drivers and how did you look?
I asked these questions but they are still unanswered:
How big and how full is the hard drive?
Does it run slow both Offline and Online? How many auto starts do you have? How many of them run all the time?
Most programs do NOT have to auto start and do not have to run all the time.

It can be configured to look and feel like Windows 7 using programs like Classic Shell (a free program) or a shareware program (I use StartIsBack (about $4.00 to register). I now have all my computers running Windows 10 except for one which is running Linux Mint 19.2. Going back to Windows XP is not worth the time and trouble in my opinion. Note: I believe that Classic Shell is no longer maintained by the original author but that someone else has taken it over and is updating now. I don't have a link but I think someone posted it here previously.

I used Classic Shell and then when the original developer ceased working on it I then went to GitHub to get the new version, Open Shell. I love it! It is well maintained and works very well.
