www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/united-states-of-secrets/?#video-2FRONTLINE goes behind the headlines to reveal the dramatic inside story of the U.S. government’s massive and controversial secret surveillance program–and the lengths they went to trying to keep it hidden from the public. Don't forget to place your phone number(s) on the National Do Not Call Registry. Lol

This was a very good program the first time I saw it when it aired, you are aware that this program is 5 and 1/2 years old and that much, if not all, of the information was released publicly about a year before the program was aired, printed in newspapers via research by excellent print reporters and also through the leaks of stolen information by Edward Snowdon the former NSA analyst. Lots more has come out since the program aired too.
In this day and age I believe it is virtually impossible to have 100% privacy, without completely giving up your phone & your computer, etc.
As pointed out in Part 2 of the broadcast, most internet providers, retail companies, google, etc., know a whole lot more about us than the government does and when the government realized this it began "piggybacking" on google cookies especially, in order to learn more. The absolute KEY reason I refuse to use Google Search Engine and haven't for 11 years since the "birth" of DuckDuckGo.

Thank you for the updates... So, DuckDuckGo no longer belongs to Google but Gabriel Weinberg. You may not believe this but until you mentioned this I had never heard about DuckDuckGo. I've always felt Google was a bit too nosy..I have to admit it was due to laziness that I used Google Chrome., but I've often questioned it's safety and privacy. As far as Passwords and Usernames whats your take on KeePassXC? I'm pretty sure there is a version for Windows. I understand folks that run Linux find it more secure then Chrome/Firefox. I'm interested in DuckDuckGo..is there much involved to transition from Chrome to DuckDuckGo? Your suggestions and thoughts appreciated. Bottom line! it doesn't appear that anything is immune to some form or type of intrusion no matter what. Sincerely, R

Bottom line! it doesn't appear that anything is immune to some form or type of intrusion no matter what. Sincerely, R I have no idea where you got your information but it is incorrect, DuckDuckGo is a Search Engine Not a browser, it has Never belonged to google. The only thing similar owned by google was an unused domain name, Duck.com they acquired when they purchased On2 Technologies, which many years before had been called Duck Corp. but it also had Nothing to do with DuckDuckGo. Google transferred ownership of that domain name to DuckDuckGo in 2018 to avoid any more confusion and to finally make sure that if somebody typed duck.com in the address bar they would be taken to DuckDuckGo and not incorrectly taken to one of several other sites like On2, Bass Pro Shops or even occasionally Google.
DuckDuckGo was Founded by Gabriel Weinberg in 2008 and he still owns it though he now has a large number of investors but in order to invest they all must agree to follow his main rule and that is this, "By default, DuckDuckGo does not collect or share personal information. That is our privacy policy in a nutshell." DuckDuckGo does have ads on its pages, which is how DuckDuckGo makes its money, but all users have the options of turning those off. It has grown rapidly in use each year and by May 2012 had 1.5 million searches a day and by October 2012 it was up to 45,000,000 per month. In January 2019 it hit a record high of 1 billion searches.
You mentioned Linux, Linux is an Operating System not a browser. But DuckDuckGo is usable on ALL browsers and all operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android systems, etc. Most browsers also now include it as one of the search options users can choose as their default search engine and most browsers also have a browser extension for DuckDuckgo....including Chrome. Nothing difficult about "transitioning" to DuckDuckGo instead of google, just change your search engine preferences in Chrome or just type DuckDuckGo into the address bar.
I have never used a password manager so I cannot advise on that.

If you think that the National Do Not Call Registry is/was for them to get your phone number, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Guess you were one of the few that didn't want you name and number in the phone book either.

The Do Not Call Registry absolutely works. I cannot imagine not having my numbers on it. I registered my landline as soon as it went into effect in 2003 and registered my cellphone when I got it, yes, this covers cellphones too. The FTC absolutely does Not share your information with anyone and never has. When you report a number to them as violating the law then they may contact you concerning this complaint. Otherwise your info goes no place else.

Good afternoon! All great information...Thank You!
The thing is I don't drink coffee Lol..maybe espresso?! What I am alluding to and I believe Judy concurs with this to some degree. "The only way is to give up your phone and computer."
I've been registered with the Do Not Call Registry for many years and I just placed an android number on there. I still get annoying calls weekly and sometimes daily on a landline. Noting as well I've used this Link to make reports regarding robo calls, scams, etc...https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/Information#crnt&panel1-7..I hope its doing some good.
Worthy to note and please don't stone me! I still use AOL often and ever since they merged with Verizon/Yahoo I believe?! the amount of spam is remarkable. Strange enough a friend the uses Yahoo as the main browser get *a* spam once a week.
I'd like to see DuckDuckGo in action..I'm not real familiar with Linux, but usually there is some type of utility/package handler you have to use in order to install just about everything..which varies depending on if its a Puppy derivative like Tahrpup/Xenial or an actual Linux Distro like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Elementary OS.,etc...
vaya con dios... R

I'd like to see DuckDuckGo in action. I am Not espousing giving up your phones or computer so there is nothing to agree with, I presume others will say the same thing only way to be nearly 100% safe and private is NEVER, EVER use any type of telephone or computer and in today's world there is no guarantee of that either. Personally I wouldn't do either. Actually, you probably shouldn't watch TV either cause your viewing habits are tracked too. Guess the only way to be absolutely sure is give up every convenience, including your car & your bank, and take all of your cash and move to a tent in the woods.
You are using the wrong report site for the Do Not Call List reporting.
Here is the correct site;
Please note it likely will take at least 31 days for calls from a specific number to stop.
Not sure exactly what you mean when you say; "I'd like to see DuckDuckGo in action." It is a search engine, it doesn't work any differently than searching with google or bing.
Search for something! There is nothing odd, different, strange or hard about it. Works just like every other search engine EXCEPT it doesn't track you, period.

Who would of ever thought that technology would become such a force or addiction? It seems the quality and tempo of life is governed by it..enabling us to live at a pace that's not sustainable. I'm just old school although I've always liked electronics and studied it..it's taken on an entirely different form now. I don't like this planned adolescence thing that's spread like a virus. Disposable shavers were bad enough..now if your computers more than 5 years old it can be considered an antique and no parts are available on a OEM level. Just call HP, Dell or any of the computer companies and they'll explain it in a very nice way. Much the same with automobiles after a certain age and so on. Oh well! Just some thoughts.

Not really sure what you mean by planned adolescence, do you mean planned obsolescence? If that is what you mean I agree, to an extent, but it also is the way competition works in a free society. Plus it should lead to improving goods and services. If you don't believe it then go to Russia and buy a Russian made car or a Russian made TV. Don't believe you would like either one of them.
This isn't new really, it has been this way since the dawn of the industrial age. If it weren't this way we would also still be driving Model-T's or a Chevy designed by Louis Chevrolet. If that were the case my husband would not just have reached his 55th year with General Motors. Would you prefer to be watching silent movies, IF you have a theater in your town. Don't think you can have it both ways. I mean would you really want to still be using your original computer with it's 40mb hard drive and 75mb of Ram with your dial-up internet connection?
Big pluses for the old days? Maybe, but without the technology we have today look at the number of curable diseases there are today...most would still be fatal. We would still be fighting polio by keeping our kids inside during the infectious summer months. So many things would not be possible. No, I will definitely take today!
