Just go to Start, Programs and Features and one at a time uninstall everything listed for Avira

This is from Avira Customer Service Engineer Thank you for contacting the Avira Customer Service. In order to completely remove the Avira products from your computer, I recommend you to perform a manual uninstall in Safe Mode by following the below steps: 1. Download our Registry Cleaner by clicking here. support.avira.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002579397-How-do-I-run-the-Avira-RegistryCleaner-on-Windows-2. Restart your computer in safe mode. In case you need instructions to restart your computer in Safe Mode for Windows 8 click here and for Windows 10 click here 3. Clean Windows Registry - Run the downloaded Registry Cleaner program (Refer to Step 1) by double-clicking on RegCleaner.exe. - After clicking on Scan for keys, activate the option Select all and click on Delete. 4. Navigate to Computer-Local Disk C-Program Files(x86)-Avira and delete manually all Avira directories available 5. Navigate to Computer-Local Disk C-Program Data-Avira and delete manually all Avira directories available Note: The Program Data folder is usually hidden; therefore, please follow the steps from this article to make it visible. support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-76. Restart your Computer into Windows normal mode; your Avira product should be completely removed now. Perhaps this has all changed by now?! Hope this doesn't cause confusion. But this method was the only one that worked totally for me.

Or you could use Revo Uninstaller and do everything with that program.

Thank you all for your help. I finally have everything out. Only problem is that I still can't use Windows Defender, probably because it is showing Malwarebytes as my protection. Thought I had read somewhere that it could be used along with an antivirus. At least I am protected. Thank you again.

Unless you have paid version of Mslwarebytes it is Not a protection program but it will stay enabled after a scan. If you have Free Malwarebytes go to System Tray and turn it off and then So does Defender will turn I

I have the paid version (Premium) Then that IS your A/V protection. You don't need Window's Defender of any other AV program

Did you have Avira and MBAM at the same time before? If so, that was also a no no.

Did you have Avira and MBAM at the same time before? If so, that was also a no no. The Malwarebytes Pro would have automatically been listed as default security program and real time protection of any other A/V program, Avira Free, Window's Defender of any other would automatically be turned off.

While I agree, you know stranger things have happened with both being turned on. Never ran 2 at the same time and don't know if you could of turned both of these on manually or not.

If you mean MBA-M & Avira I believe Avira real time would have been disabled. But you are also correct you never should run two AVs at the same time. Running MBA-M with an A/V program applies only to the free version, which is only a scanner

Malwarebytes is NOT an antivirus! Barney, the new premium version IS also now an antivirus program. The Free version is still just a scanner and can be used with another AV program.
This was noted earlier back in November:
