The last time that I tried to backup my Windows 10 computer using Cobian I got this error. I have many years of files stored on this computer in folders, sub folders, and sub sub folders. Cobian does not tell you which are too long to backup. I am afraid that if I were to move things around to try and shorten the paths that all of my backups (both with Cobian and Google drive) would be a mess since previous files wouldn't be found. Any help for me would be appreciated. I saw a registry hack, but of course, I am leery of doing something that drastic. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I am surprised you never got this error before because under the Windows file naming system the total name cannot or path exceed 259 characters. This includes the folder path, file name and file extension and this has been the case since Windows 95. Are you certain this isn't a brand new file since you did your last backup cause it is odd you've never gotten this before. Other than renaming the only other option is a registry hack.

I have no idea on the file since Cobian doesn't point out where the problem is. If I recall, it was a lot of files. Thanks for responding.

Since you never got this error before when was the last time you used Cobain to do a back up? This or they would likely have to be files created after that backup. Otherwise you would have gotten the error before and/or the backup would have failed.

It had been a few months. Thanks. That will help in doing some detective work.
