Wow thank u all for the wonderful help u have given me. Will take the advice & ignore the update for now. Only wish I did have someone who could download to a thumb drive but unfortunately not. Most people I know are older like me & definitely not computer savy. They don't even know what I am talking about most of the time.

Well folks I am finally up with the rest of you. Received a major amount of updates last evening, took several hours in fact. I am now also on Windows 10 v.1809 build 17763.168.
It took several hours because besides the four shown in my attachment I also received a major amount of updates for my Microsoft Office 2010 which was not unusual because when my os versions are updated then Office also receives many updates too.
All of these were received automatically, I did not search for or do any of them manually.

What version are you running Vera? To find out for sure go to Start, Search and type in winver. You can then find out exactly which version you are running.
You are in Canada, I am in the US, in the mid-west, Everton is in New Zealand, bigbarney is in Scotland, budgall is in the US in California. Note the different times we all received the updates. As you'll note we all received them sometimes weeks apart. Don't panic.

Thanks, Judy. I am really not too worried about getting the update. I usually only turn on my laptop 2 or 3 times a week. Most of internet use I do on my iPad or iPhone. When I use the laptop I leave it on during the night in case of updstes. They will come eventually like you say. Right now my version is 1803.

That’s what I was thinking. I often wondered if updates could be downloaded when the computer/laptop was shut down. You answered that question 😁 thanks.

That’s what I was thinking. I often wondered if updates could be downloaded when the computer/laptop was shut down. You answered that question 😁 thanks. Exactly, if the computer is turned off then it has no possibility of being online and of course in order to get updates it has to be online Since the computer is only used a couple days a week then really it is operating on sort of a "hit or miss" proposition when it comes to being able to get the updates. Also, since you say you leave it on over night on days you do use it in case of updates be sure that you have the Active Hours set for day time. As the instructions note; If you have it set to daytime then this would mean it "should" (no guarantee) do the updating at night. As I said, doesn't mean it will but may increase your chances.

I just now set my active hours from 10 AM to 1 PM. That should be ample time for the download. .

I just now set my active hours from 10 AM to 1 PM. That should be ample time for the download. . I would think so. That means you would be physically using the computer for 3 hours so it would not shut down and restart the computer during that time, which often IS required to complete the update installs. Leaves 21 hours where it is turned on & connected to the internet but you are not using it definitely should be ample time. No guarantee of course that you would get them that first day, as I said, "hit and miss" but it should help you be able to receive them. How long it will take depends on how many different update files you receive. I received the upgrade to v.1809 and three other files + all the updates for my Microsoft Office 2010 that were done immediately after the Windows updates were complete. I think most folks said theirs took a couple hours max, obviously some could take less and some would take more but probably an average of a couple hours.

Windows 10 automatically checks your computer for updates randomly every 17 - 22 hours (when connected to the internet) If you have limited time when you are able to be online the you can manually check for updates via Windows update in settings.WU will scan your machine. If there is nothing available for your machine you have lost nothing and if there is an update it will begin the download.

Still waiting for the update! My husbands HP laptop with Windows 10 updated 3 weeks ago. I made sure our settings are identical and also leave the laptop on from the time I get uo to going to bed. I am beginning to wonder if I should do a manual uodate? On the other hand it seems to be working fine.

You say you leave it on from the time you get up until going to bed. Change that setting to the average time at least 10-12 hours. 3 hours would likely not be enough time to get a large update. The one last week, yes, only took maybe 20 minutes max. but the big one took over two hours on my computer.
Does it actually show that it has automatically checked for updates? It should show date and time. Mine checks daily and yours should also.
There were actually new updates released last week on Tuesday and you should have received them.
Have you actually hit the Check for updates button?

For about a week I have set my active hours from 8 AM to 9 PM and I did get several updates: I check for updates all the time even though it is set to automatically update. The picture shows my update history. It shows that I did get some updates for 1803. Hmmmm

You WILL get updates for 1803 until you receive 1809 so there is nothing wrong with that at all. Leave that time set you have as is. 3 hours is definitely NOT enough time. By default, active hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM (9hours) to begin with and active hours are the hours you usually are using the computer and by default the computer will NOT restart during those hours. If an update comes in of course you can manually restart it. Most of the time that is what I do because I have mine set 8 to 8 and if I try to shut down after those times then I have to wait until all is complete before turning off my computer. It is very possible that your computer has been behind on some updates for 1803. One of those, the first one listed, KB4023057 was released July 14, 2017. All of the other updates were the ones released last week and of course were for all versions of Windows 10
You can manually download the upgrade if you wish or wait until it comes. I know others who have not yet received it.

Maybe now that I have longer active hours set it will come eventually. For about 4 weeks I have set up a password for my laptop as a safety measure but I don't think that will make a difference since I use it to start the computer and then just keep it going until night time.

I don't use a password and leave my computer turned on probably 14 hours a day. I know some folks are absolutely emphatic that the computer should be password protected but if it is totally turned off there is no way that an outsider could turn it on and in order to use the password of course that would be necessary. In a business setting of course that would be needed and required but honestly there is absolutely nothing on my home computer that anyone would want and any secure web sites require a secure password and that is where of course I use them.

Our house has been broken into and I am paranoid that my “gadgets” could be stolen and used for nefarious purposes, hoping a password would be a first defence.

Oh that is different for sure and a good reason for a password but be sure it is super hard. Hadn't thought much about break ins but that IS a good reason for the log on password.
Think I WILL activate my password.

It happened many years ago, before this mortal beeing did not even know about computers. Several watches and cameras went. It was a few kids and they got caught but that sort of thing sticks in one’s mind. Even now when I drive up our driveway I check over the windows and door for any odd signs.
